This arrangement has been made to be as flexible as possible, with a strong bass line and inner parts that often divide but could all be performed with just one player on a line; the choir also divides, but could just sing the top (melody) line throughout.

And so, this unit is used in its unadulterated state throughout. The rhythm is divided into groups of three, deliberately set within a 4/4 time signature, so as to create an effect of hemiola and of syncopation that would not be evident were it set in a triple meter. The clusters play as solid blocks, then divide into two parts, then three. Then the note-values are made twice as small, and the music really takes off ! This is by FAR the most typically modern of all the etudes in the set, as far as rhythmic complexity, percussiveness, and a lack of traditional melody. Running time is just over 2 mins. MBB.

The melody is passed around players. It is a very effective novelty piece. The cello part could also be played on marimba with octave adjustments likely needed near the end.

I have kept as close as possible to Simon & Garfunkel's rhythms and harmonic style, but divided up the melody so Sopranos and Altos sing the first verse and chorus and then the men lead in the second verse. All then sing to the end in harmony and there are some entertaining flourishes along the way. There are two bars with an optional divide for the men but sticking within the ranges specified below.

For 1, the focus of the passage is keeping a steady quarter note pulse, for 2, the pulse is subdivided into eighth notes, for 3, eighth-note triplets, and so on. By the end, players will subdivide the beat all the way to 9, playing nonuplets! While the piece is short, there is a great deal of material packed into it and will require extensive training with the metronome to be successful. .
