'Ein Orakelspruch für sechs Kontrabässe' (An oracle for six double-basses) – this is how Widmann calls his composition which he wrote upon commission of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra on the occasion of the 75th birthday of the conductor Claudio Abbado. The subtle theme seems to be the saga of Teiresias, the blind prophet, from Greek mythology. According to Widmann himself, he imagined a sound for the unusual instrumentation of six double-basses that 'is both blind and seeing' in its enigmatic whispering.

Widmann's Quintet is a deliberate tribute to Mozart's work for the same instrumentation (KV 452), both of which can be easily combined. In contrast to Mozart's classical forms of movements, Widmann composed 18 short miniatures some of which bear evocative titles while others bear musical-theoretical titles (e.g. 'Verwunschener Garten' (Enchanted Garden) or 'Kontrapunktische Studie' (Contrapuntal Study]). Traditional and contemporary playing techniques alternate in the musical texture. Therefore, in conjunction with the pointed style, this piece is also suitable for demanding educational purposes.

Die Struktur verdichtet sich zu einer Studie über einen Akkord, der im Prinzip das gesamte Stück hindurch variiert, aber in seinem Tonmaterial unverändert bleibt. Bis sich schließlich das Stück verdichtet zu einem sechs-stimmigen Kanon, der von der ersten Violine bis zum dritten Violoncello wandert und dabei zwischen Dur- und Moll-Terz pendelt. This Piano Trio Passacaglia is the “junior� companion piece to my Cello Concerto Dunkle Saiten [Dark Strings], or more precisely to the concerto’s large-dimensional introductory section with the indication “Feierlich, schreitend� [solemnly, striding]. What in the Cello concerto then inescapably culminates in a catastrophe remains in this composition ostensibly largely conflict-free. This is in fact perhaps one of my most peaceful and conflict-free compositions; it consists of half an hour of almost exclusively tonal progressions. Here, passacaglia (stepping dance!) is taken literally: the step progressions themselves become the subject of the work. This also includes pausing, not being able to progress, feeling one’s way, stumbling and taking compulsive steps forward.As familiar as the harmonic surface of the structure appears, for me the natural adaptation of the musical flow was new to a similar degree. This is my attempt to produce a linear tonal band (a horizontal) exclusively with the aid of harmonic – i.e. vertical – progressions.- Jörg Widmann.

In each of the four movements, Beethoven succeeds in re-inventing the archetypal movement forms with equal intensity, meaning that they are consequently nothing like what they once were. My Beethoven Studies (String Quartets 6-10) explore the cosmos of this so very unique quartet to a greater or lesser degree, and in explicit form in this concluding quartet of the cycle. The Cavatina from op. 130 is one of the most emotional movements ever written by Beethoven. Although some of the original material can be recognised in my own Cavatina, I consider it as one of the most personal and freest movements of my entire quartet cycle. This is a free form of ardent singing and flowing, marking the conclusion of the cycle which grappled so vehemently and sensuously with the cosmos of Beethoven’s quartets. The versatility of the work shows, for example, in its obbligato instrumentation of bass flute and bossed gong – both instruments require only one additional player.
