Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q779677). My String Quartet No. 7 – the second of my ‘Beethoven studies’ – is the first of my quartets to possess a two-movement structure. The density of texture is additionally enhanced, meaning that the opening Grave is internally so jaggedly animated that it is never quite clear whether it is perhaps an Allegro movement after all. The second movement is a mirror image of the first: it begins with a playful pizzicato Allegro – initially tentative attempts towards a calm, chorale-like cantabile are repeatedly rebuffed by new fast elements. Ultimately, a melodious hymn exalting in the greatest heights succeeds in establishing itself. Jörg Widmann.

Jörg Widmann composed the three-movement work in 2016 in memory of the Swiss flautist Aurèle Nicolet. The world premiere took place as part of a concert in Freiburg which was dedicated to Nicolet who had died shortly before; the interpreter was Emmanuel Pahud, one of his pupils. The versatility of the work shows, for example, in its obbligato instrumentation of bass flute and bossed gong – both instruments require only one additional player.

As far back as I can remember, I have always been fascinated with fairy tales: with their archetypal characters and set phrases like ‘Once upon a time …’ and ‘… they all lived happily ever after’. Fairy tales were however also a source of unrest for me as a seismograph of mankind’s underlying primal fears and desires. So as a performer and composer I have always felt that Robert Schumann’s Märchenerzählungen [Fairy Tales] (scored for the same instrumentation as my own composition) was a disjointed, complex contemporary work – despite the innocence and naivety of its initial appearance. I therefore do not intend my own Es war einmal … [Once upon a time …] to be a mere sentimental, nostalgic flight into the distant past, but as a naive and fantastical alternative concept to our genuine world with all its upheavals. The piece does not directly reflect Joseph Haydn's Seven Last Words but I would not have been able to write it without knowing that work. The movements in Haydn's quartets (except the final earthquake) are slow movements of shocking forcefulness. What makes the work even more unsettling for me is the relaxed and cheerful acceptance of death (the 'smile' of the A major pizzicato thirds!). When I made myself familiar with the subject matter of crucifixion I discovered that terms like 'walking' and 'the last walk' were most important to me. My piece starts at the final stage of this experience. It contains a number of lost sounds, phrases of futility which come from nowhere and lead to nowhere. The horrifying rubbing and sanding of skin and wood become the 'theme’ of the piece which is combined with tonal, choral-like melodies. I am interested in how to make noises no longer symbolize desolation and tonal phrases no longer represent confidence. - Jörg Widmann.

It has become a collection of highly diverse and multifaceted pieces and forms, ranging from Walzer (Waltz) to Danse macabre, from Fanfare to Zirkusparade (Circus Parade). The fact that the interpreters of the world premiere, Arthur and Lucas Jussen, are siblings, may and should be felt in the teasingly affectionate Fangspiel (Game of Tag) in which the two pianists sometimes deliberately play past each other. Die damals sehr angesagten „Techno-Nights inspirierten mich zu diesem Stück. Ein rhythmischer Drive und ein permanenter Wechsel des Pulses jagen in Höchstgeschwindigkeit (180 Schläge pro Minute) vorüber. Die Struktur verdichtet sich zu einer Studie über einen Akkord, der im Prinzip das gesamte Stück hindurch variiert, aber in seinem Tonmaterial unverändert bleibt. Bis sich schließlich das Stück verdichtet zu einem sechs-stimmigen Kanon, der von der ersten Violine bis zum dritten Violoncello wandert und dabei zwischen Dur- und Moll-Terz pendelt.
