Composed by Jeffrey Ouper. 20th Century,Baroque,Classical,Contemporary. Score. 9 pages. Jeffrey Ouper #5362761. Published by Jeffrey Ouper (A0.866229).

Sonata in the style of Scarlatti is an homage to the composer Domenico Scarlatti and is modeled after one of his many piano sonatas, Sonata in E, K. 403. When I first started learning Scarlattiā€™s piano sonata, I found myself missing notes in the arpeggios in the first phrase, leading to contemporary harmony that I found interesting.  I later decided to write my own version of the sonata from my own contemporary perspective.  This sonata follows the binary format common with most Scarlatti sonatas, but does not repeat the second half.  It also features a contemporary view of harmony and several key changes while keeping trills and melodic figuration similar to Scarlattiā€™s.

Composed by Domenico Scarlatti. Arranged by Fiona Caldarevic. Baroque,Concert. Score and parts. 17 pages. Fiona Caldarevic #5194641. Published by Fiona Caldarevic (A0.827216).

Originally written by Scarlatti for keyboard, this lesser-known sonata for string orchestra is a delightful 3-minute piece perfect for a quick sight-read by a capable string orchestra or a short project for a high school or college string orchestra. Featuring a busy melody that ducks and weaves from part to part, this arrangement is a fun piece for all players, with plenty of dynamics to keep players on their toes. Note that the cello part has a short section in tenor clef. .

Composed by Lily Afshar. Arranged by Lily Afshar. Classical. E-book. Mel Bay Publications - Digital Sheet Music #30557EB. Published by Mel Bay Publications - Digital Sheet Music (M0.30557EB).

Born in the Italian city of Naples, Giuseppe Domenico Scarlatti (1685-1757) was one of the few Baroque composers to transition into the Classical period. Scarlatti composed operas, cantatas, symphonias and liturgical pieces, but his 555 keyboard sonatas are most well-known; a vast collection of single movements in binary form. Lily Afshar's arrangement of Sonata K. 11 (a favorite of Segovia) utilizes staccato articulation reminiscent of the harpsichord and other techniques including cross-string trills and minimal slurs. The pair of sonatas work well together, written in E minor and E major.

Sylvius Leopold Weiss (1687-1750) was the most accomplished lutenist of the Baroque period and the most prolific composer of lute music, writing over one thousand pieces for the instrument. The four pieces arranged in this book show the beautiful polyphony and fantastical writing of Weiss. Afshar utilizes campanella (cross-string) fingerings throughout to emphasize the musical line and produce a fuller sound on the instrument.
