The missa 'Cantabo Domino' was composed in 1958 for the liturgical festival of a Catholic student community in Freiburg im Breisgau. The piece can be performed by an amateur choir without great effort. Of modern harmony, the mass is exemplarily short and concise, with the comprehensibility of the text being to the fore. Hummel deliberately adjusted the melodic phrasing to the Gregorian chants to form a stylistic unity. This 'utility music' in the best sense of the word is ideal for any choir!

The chant is taken from the 3rd Sunday in Advent.It is dedicated to my friend organist Colin Mark Andrews.It's a free paraphrase for the organ where the tune can be heard in the upper voice. Other voices sometimes echos fragments of the chant.I tried to change the mode a few times to make it colorful. Even the whole-tone mode seemed appropriate.It's an intermediate level piece.I hope you'll create something and share it with the world today.

Born in Nuremberg, Hans Leo Hassler (1564-1612) went to Venice at the age of 20 where he studied with Andrea Gabrieli, along with Andrea's nephew Giovanni, with whom he became friends. The friendship lasted after Hassler returned to Germany the following year, and there is evidence of at least one collaborative composition with Gabrieli. His final post was as Kapellmeister in Dresden, and after his death he was replaced by Michael Praetorius and Heinrich Schütz. Hassler's four part motet 'Cantate Domino' is an exciting setting of the traditional Catholic text, taken from Psalm 96. It is well suited to being voiced by four trombones.
