Origins musically represents three important recent scientific explorations of space and matter that are designed to give humans a better understanding of the origins of the universe and the origins of life. The first movement, Black Holes and Cyclotrons, represents the quest to understand and reproduce the relationship between gravitation and energy that scientists believe caused the big bang and our ever-expanding universe. The music of this movement represents the danger inherent in these explorations into the unknown. There are sections of the movement that are lighter in nature that depict subatomic particles dancing around in a particle accelerator. The end of the movement increases in tempo reflecting the ever-increasing speeds of particle accelerators and the gravitational pull of black holes. The Surface of Mars is the title of the second movement that depicts NASA’s Mars Exploration Rover Mission. The rovers Spirit and Opportunity have explored the surface of Mars and have revealed the surface as being mostly a barren landscape void of life. The outer sections of this movement reflect this discovery. The middle section of the movement represents the excitement of one of the rovers finding indications of water having existed on Mars and therefore the possibility that life may have also existed. The third movement, Window Into Deep Space, is a tribute to the Hubble Space Telescope. This movement has many uplifting sections as the Hubble Space Telescope has provided views of the universe never before seen from Earth. It also has sections of anxiety as this mission was wrought with several failures that nearly derailed it. The promise of increased understanding of our universe is reflected in the ending of this composition. The score prints on legal size paper and the parts on letter.

Published by Zack Richards (A0.894408). I wrote this piece in response to the #BlackLivesMatter Protests across the United States and world during the early summer of 2020. The extreme extent of peaceful protests and violent riots demonstrated the desperate need for change in a way I had not witnessed before. I knew quickly that I wanted to write music in some sort of response to the situation, but I struggled at first to find my voice within the movement. I am a white male and have experienced the privilege that comes with it. No matter how much I sympathized or understood the struggles of minorities in our culture, I knew I could not possibly bring the full meaning of it through my music, as I could never really experience the trials they have faced constantly for so long. So instead I decided to write words and music that reflected how I hoped things would be going forward after this movement. I wanted this to be an anthem for those who have suffered through real oppression, in any form. While there are some religious undertones in the text I chose, I tried to find words that could resonate with anyone, reaching beyond color, culture, belief, orientation, age, or any other dividing label. I tried to write in regard to one thing we all have in common, humanity. I hope I was able to accomplish this. The anthem can be done in parts or unison or as a solo. It can also be done with or without accompaniment.

After failing to chart in the UK, it was released in North America a few months later. It met with more success there, especially in Canada, where it peaked at No. 34.[3] The appearance of Border Song on the Canadian charts was John's first chart appearance in any country. Border Song was also John's first song to chart in the United States, peaking at No. 92 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 69 on the Cash Box Top 100[4] in October 1970. A cover by soul icon Aretha Franklin (with Holy Moses following the title in parentheses to reflect the repeated phrase in the song) fared better reaching No. 37 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 23 in the Cash Box Top 100 in December 1970.[5] It was included as the closing track of Aretha's 1972 Young, Gifted and Black album as well. John himself wrote and added the last verse, which departs from the theme of alienation and speaks against bigotry: Holy Moses, let us live in peace/let us strive to find a way to make all hatred cease/there's a man over there.
