African-American writer and civil rights activist James Weldon Johnson is perhaps best known as the author of Lift Every Voice and Sing, written on the occasion of Lincoln’s birthday and now known as the Black national anthem.  He established himself as a writer during the Harlem Renaissance (the African-American cultural movement in New York City in the 1920’s) for his poems, novels and anthologies. This poem Sence You Went Away creates the narrative of one who bemoans the loss of a loved one.  His bluesy poem features a southern dialect style.  It is written for 4-part male ensemble (TTBB) and is performed a capella. Performance time:2:00+  It is an apt introduction to Johnson’s work and most befitting for study during Black History month.

        Deep in the heart of Dingle Woods everyone is preparing for Christmas. On a
tree stump Barny the barn owl wakes from his slumbers, winks, blinks and toowit-toowoos.
Woody the little fir tree is feeling very sorry for himself, bemoaning the fact that all of
his leafy friends have been taken by the townspeople for their Christmas festivities and
even the late arrival of Jack Frost, a most exuberant character, finds it difficult to lift our
little friend’s spirit with his cheerful banter.
         And so our fir tree resigns himself to make the best of Christmas Eve as all
the forest creatures hurry off home to prepare for the coming celebrations. However,
things take a sudden turn when he overhears the fox and weasel devising a cunning plan
to make a pile of money, by going into the ‘Wholesale Toy Business’.
      Of course when others hear about the plan, Woody becomes nominated to
save Christmas and sets out on his adventure, with a little help from the Christmas Fairy,
Snowy White the snowman and Gordon the Garden Gnome, along with other forest
friends. Needless to say Foxy and Weazy get their just deserts, but just how this comes
about, will have to remain a secret until ............

P.S. Owing to the high cost in orchestration The music is only available as a piano score with lyrics and chords. However this is reflected in the price. After a maestoso rendition of the first verse by the brass section, the drums set up the tempo into a tour de force medium fast tempo tune influenced by Duke Jordan's Jordu (recorded by the Clifford Brown-Max Roach Quintet) & Bobby Timmons's Moanin' (recorded by Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers) that while retaining much of the original tune (verse, refrain & bridge) brings out a distinctive hard bop-influenced twist coupled with solos by tenor sax & drums as well as a powerful soli by the trumpet section and a shout chorus moment by the full band. 

This chart is perfect as a concert opener, anchorer or closer, and it's another good twist of the saying something old, something new in a refreshing way.
