The song evokes the spirit of the hilltop castle home of the ancient Irish kings, through the symbol of the harp, the traditional instrument of the Irish people. The vocal part could be taken by soprano, alto, or tenor voice ranges, and if the pitch is too low for a particular voice, the guitarist could use a capo to raise the pitch of the guitar. He had done some drinking, he had smoked like a chimney for many years. As a result of some bad choices, he had to undergo quadruple bypass heart surgery, from which he never really came back fully. I remember my last visit was on the porch swing at dad and mom's  place. He was really down on himself, very dissatisfied with his life, and basically considered himself a failure. I tried to assure him that I was proud of him. After all, he stayed with mom, ran a small business, left a paid off house, always kept us fed, and even took us on some wild journeys across the country. I thought about dad after he passed and the thought came to me that even though he was down on himself, in my eyes he was a king. The rest is history. .

A very interesting yet quite sad tale goes with this song. An elderly gentleman got in touch and asked if I could write down a Christmas Carol he’d composed. I agreed, and had several visits with him when he sang the carol he’d composed. I wrote it all down, and produced this brass band version (and a vocal one) for him. He came to our band one night to hear what I’d done, and was visibly moved. Sadly, he passed away very soon after this, but at least his daughter Wendy had her carol. It’s a very traditional carol, yet with differences, and would add a new edge to any Christmas concert.
