The Devil His Due is a response to saxophonist Peter Verdonck’s love for Death Metal Music.  Not being tuned into that kind of rock, I imagined what it night sound like if written for saxophone and piano.  As a starting point, I began with the lowest, most raucous sound I could imagine for the combination of bari and piano.  From there, I organized the piece numerically around occult numbers, all the while emphasizing the devil’s interval, the tritone, and the muscular sound of metal power chords made of fifths and octaves.  The appeal of writing devil music has appealed to composers since at least the Romantic era (composer/violinist Niccolo Paganini even tried his best to look devilish), and my piece is an attempt at the same.

Indeed the arranger's own wind quintet has played it hundreds of times as an encore and is enjoyed by players and audiences alike. These short piano solos were commissioned as part of the first annual Christmas in July showcase in 2019. The composition encodes the donor’s first name (praenomen) as a musical motif, which is stated before the start of each piece. I also enjoyed imagining ways that each piece could reflect an aspect of each subject: 1. Barbara is a classy woman who I imagine has quite a social calendar; 2. Rachel manages three energetic children (two are my students) yet remains cool-headed; 3. John is a former adult student with an interest in new age piano music; 4. Marjorie is an effervescent personality and a logical thinker; 5. Angela is a thoughtful friend and is full of pep; and 6. Jean is a fellow church pianist who enjoys that genre’s sentimental style. These compositions can, of course, be enjoyed for their own merits.

It was recorded on July 25, 1930 by Fred Waring's Pennsylvanians (on the Victor label) with vocal by Clare Hanlon and The Waring Girls. Several other artists also recorded the song in 1930 including bandleaders Ted Wallace (Columbia) and Earl Burtnett (Brunswick) as well as vocalists Johnny Marvin (Victor), Marion Harris (Brunswick) and Lee Morse (Columbia). This version was developed from the original 1930 sheet music and features a root-based chord blocking that John and I have used in a number of our arrangements - we hope you like what we've done with this grand old tune!

Chiquitita was the first single released by the Swedish group ABBA from the album Voulez-Vous.With the success of the English version, ABBA also recorded a version of the song in Spanish. The song was first released on the album ABBA Oro: Grandes Éxitos.Chiquitita was performed at UNICEF's 1979 charity event, Music for UNICEF Concert, broadcast worldwide by the United Nations General Assembly. As a result of the event, the group donated half of the song's royalties to UNICEF. To this day, 50% of the proceeds from the song go to UNICEF, in recognition of the International Year of the Child in 1979. In May 2007, Chiquitita generated more than SEK 15,000,000 (about 2.5 million dollars).The song was a hit in several countries: Belgium, Finland, Ireland, Netherlands, New Zealand, Spain and Switzerland; reached the top 5 in Australia, West Germany, Great Britain, Norway and Sweden, becoming the most successful single from the Voulez-Vous album.Chiquitita, was one of the few ABBA singles to be released without a custom-made video. Since then, in the group's video collections, musical television programs have been used. The clip for Chiquitita was recorded at the BBC for the Abba in Switzerland show, shown throughout Europe at Easter 1979. In it, the band appears singing the song on a mountain, with a snowman in the background.
