This simple sermon song is based on a sermon delivered by Dr. Paul de Jong at First Presbyterian Church of Fort Myers Florida on July 2, 2023.  It superimposes lyrics from the story of Numbers 20: 1-13 on the children's tune of Little Black Duck, Swimming in the Water. Rather than having piano accompaniment, it has guitar chords.  As the Israelites were wandering in the desert, they implored Moses to get water and the first time, he followed God's command and used his rod to srike a rock to bring forth water, and all was well.  However, years later as the people grumbled and threatened the leadership of Moses, he went to God , andmissed the instruction to SPEAK to the rock and he hit it again instead.  God gave his people needed water, but saw to it that neither brother Aaron nor Moses would see the promised land for this little slip up.  It's a fun song, which could have motions for  kids of a slip motion upward and flowing water, etc. This song could be sung by children at Sunday school or Hebrew school or by youth groups or adults.

He spoke to the disciples directly.  The music is lively with three solo verses and quartet choruses to follow.  The piano accompaniment is jazzy and the whole piece comes across like a Negro  spiritual.

Roger Peterson, who preached on the text of the music, and he was so impressed he had us sing it to First Presbyterian Church the next Sunday. Moses and Miriam was based on Numbers 12: 1-16 in a sermon preached by our Fort Myers Florida senior pastor Dr. Paul de Jong on June 4, 2023. It is a ballad for one or two voices with piano, or organ or guitar accompaniment. Its six verses tell the tale of what happened to Miriam, Moses' sister when she put up a great fuss when her famous brother married a black woman. It is a lesson from Bible times, that racism is unacceptable. Sweetly Sang the Donkey is a sermon song from the Palm Sunday Sermon  2024 of Dr. Paul de Jong at First Presbyterian Church Fort Myers Florida.  The text is found in each of the four gospels, but on this day the sermon was from Mark 11:1-11 and the donkey was stressed.  In my mind, I thought of the children's song Sweetly Sings the Donkey and I extended it with bits of The Eentsy Weentsy Spider.  Of course it had to be in the key of Dmajor,  The bass provided consists of only two chords: Dmajor and Amajor7.  It tells the story of the procession on Palm Sunday and  like Balaam's donkey, the doneky carrying Jesus is given the gift of speaking. It contrasts the crowds that on Sunday wave Palms branches and  later in the week wave their fists demanding the crucifiction of Jesus.  It brings in the interesting note that Solomon, son of David, also rode a donkey.  This is a fun children's choir song with a very deep message.

Born in Sydney in 1881, the seventh child of a wealthy family, Kelly was educated at Sydney Grammar School before being sent to England where he attended Eton College and Oxford University. At Eton his musical talents were nurtured under the tutelage of Dr Charles Harford Lloyd. He also developed a passion for rowing, eventually winning a gold medal for England in the 1908 London Olympics. After graduating from Oxford, Kelly began five years of musical study in piano and composition at the Hoch Conservatorium in Frankfurt, Germany. He made his professional debut as a pianist in Sydney in 1911. His London debut followed in 1912. His career was interrupted by the outbreak of the First World War.Elegy for String Orchestra In Memoriam Rupert Brooke was written during his war service in the final year of his life. It is an accomplished and moving work in the English pastoral style of the time, its lush modal string-writing sounding not unlike his famous English near-contemporary Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958). In the Australian context it stands out as a mature and beautiful musical statement by an Australian composer in relation to actual personal experiences of the tragedy of the First World War. As such it's unique in the Australian classical canon, and also part of that wider generational tragedy of what might have been if such an accomplished composer had lived on to create music into his old age. WHAT HAPPENED ON THAT MOUNTAIN is a sermon song based on the sermon With Jesus on the Mountain delivered by Dr. Paul de Jong on November 12, 2023 at the First Presbyterian Church, Fort Myers, Florida using the text of Mark 8:31-9:29.  The tune is an SATB arrangement of the famous Christmas spiritual Go Tell it on the Mountain with original lyrics to teach about a very important event in the New Testament - Jesus on the Mount of Transfiguragtion.  The Chorus departs from the rhythm of the original spiritual when the name of Jesus is sung, emphasizing that He is on a different plane than Moses and Elijah.This and the second verse emphasize how Peter, as he often was, was in error of considering building temporal booths to celebrate the three transfigured beings.  What the voice from heaven says and what Jesus says are extremely important.  This may not overtake the popularity of the original Christmas spiritual, but I would hope that some congregations would consider using it as a teaching hymn.

When the children of Israel finally repented for their complaining, God instructed Moses to create a brass snake and set it on a pole, and for those who would look at this creation, even if they had venemous snake bites, they would not die. Likewise, for Christians, if they look to the cross, a symbol of execution, as henious as an electric chair or noose, we will have eternal life.
