Whether its food, alcohol, drugs, or viewing pornography. Addictions destroy the lives of everyone around them. I look at addictions as if they were little devils that have us down and are jumping on top of us and won’t let us get up.  Little by little the addicted and all of his friends and family lose faith, hope, love, peace, joy, and self respect. The shame of addiction keeps them in despair. They constantly have voices in their heads that say you’re no good, you’re no good, do you hear me, you’re no good. Well I’m here to tell you that is a lie. You are good. You are worth something. Life ,family, love, peace, joy. Those are all things that are worth fighting for. Take them back. You are not unworthy. You can fight the addiction. You have made mistakes that are correctable.  God tells us to resist the devil and he will flee from you. Then God says to draw near unto Him and He will draw near unto you. When God draws close to us, we will receive His strength and power to leave the addiction behind. With Him we can overcome anything.

Turner’s The Sun Setting Through Vapour was my inspiration because of the different layers and zones of interest which influenced my composition’s structure.

The central focus of the painting is the setting sun in the central background of the work. The reflection of the sun draws the eye into the foreground and the market scene in the front right zone. This created the first section of my composition, the idea of the sun setting through the vapour before revealing a market scene which then fades back into the atmospheric sun setting through the vapour.

The second section moves to the story of the Napoleonic War ships in the middle and backgrounds of the painting using percussion. Reflecting this the section centres around the narrative of a naval battle; the manoeuvring into position and flexing of strength; the pre-battle planning; the calm before and finally the battle itself.

The third section draws together two aspects: the sun setting and the prison ship, drawing us from the aftermath of the battle to the journey back to shore showing the juxtaposing emotions of the imagined victorious British (the piccolo) and French prisoners (the cello). Closer to shore the vapour descends and we hear inflections of the market before returning to the sun setting through the vapour with the harbour clock (Tubular Bells) grounding us in real time.

He Will Lead Me Home (choral church anthem composed in 2023)

The Inspiration

A few Easter seasons ago, during one of our Tuesday Choir rehearsals, we were preparing for “Good Shepherd Sundayâ€. Diane our Choir director commented “there are very few Good Shepherd pieces to choose fromâ€. One of our sopranos replied “Let's write our ownâ€. I made note of it and this past year finally found the time and inspiration to give it a try. I did my usual research on the subject matter and then found a drawing of a Shepherd standing at the top of a hill with his sheep lined up behind him. Leaning on his staff the Shepherd was contemplating the safest route home. Upon his decision he looked back and called to his sheep.

The Music

The music begins with a piano introduction depicting the Shepherd standing at the top of the hill contemplating the safest route home, as noted earlier. Stately in nature it features a simple melodic idea, played by the right hand, which is then answered by a series of majestic chords. This “back and forth†continues until it reaches its climax at a D flat major chord against a slur from a high G to F. At this point we hear what will be a reoccurring chordal theme of C major to F major and later C minor to F major. The accompaniment begins, now in three quarter time signifying the sheep beginning to move in response to the shepherds call. The verse melody is drawn from the opening three notes of the introduction but with a different rhythm and repeats it self with underlying harmonic changes. The melody and chord structure is somewhat impressionistic in nature. Lyrically a contrast is drawn between how the Shepherd (Jesus) provides for his sheep (followers) and how God provides for the “sheep†(animals) through nature. As the verse comes to an end we are lead to the realization that “the shepherd is the Lord our King, the Good Shepherd Kingâ€. The refrain begins with the tenor continuing to solo on the main melody. â€He Will Lead Home†is realized and proclaimed! A soprano descant is added for contrast. Harmonically the music makes use of the various minor key options, “melodic, harmonic and naturalâ€. The refrain concludes proclaiming “The Good Shepherds the Way He's our Life!â€. The second verse shadows the thought pattern of verse one leading to the refrain once more but this time a bridge is introduced to add drama with the piano playing a significant role. A return to the refrain is varied with the tenor singing a portion of it against softly played chords; but then resumes its rhythmic drive to its ultimate conclusion by repeating “the Good Shepherds the Way He's our Life!â€.

Program Notes

Voicing can be varied based on what types of singers are available. For example this could be sung by 2 tenors with one singing the descant down an octave. Finally as noted in the score, the intro is optional though I prefer it be played; the shepherd contemplating a safe route is important in the music with its contrast to the verse music and important in our life of faith.

Composed by Stephen Lines. Contemporary. Score and parts. 99 pages. Stephen Lines #26285. Published by Stephen Lines (A0.957733).

Bramshill was written to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the police staff college and was premiered by the British Police Symphony Orchestra in 2008. In 2011 it undertook some quite serious revision. Bramshill House was until recently the home of the Police Staff College. In 1953 the Home Office purchased Bramshill from Lord Brocket. There is evidence that the site has been inhabited since the time of Domesday and the Norman Conquest. The present building was constructed principally by Edward Zouche, 11th Baron Zouche of Harringworth, between c. 1605-1625. The music is written in large ternary form as a concert rondo. There are features within which depict and draw together various facets of the early history of Bramshill House as a Jacobean structure with that of its current role as the police staff college. After a declamatory eighteen bar opening in the key of C minor the piece leads towards the principal theme - it is introduced by the horn, quietly accompanied by chords from the clarinets dipping in and out of the chalumeau register - a haunting, ethereal theme that depicts the mystery of the ancient building and its numerous reported wraiths. The theme develops and is pronounced giacoso in the strings with light accompaniment in the higher woodwinds. A restatement of the main theme is followed by a section, fugato; this depicts a police officer on the beat in the early hours of a cold, wet, winter’s night. This theme transmutes into a quasi-stately dance such as may have been performed in Bramshill’s great withdrawing room or the long gallery in the 1600’s. A series of 6/3 chords then develop into what sounds akin to a police siren; the section culminates in a wash of sound with police theme, stately dance and siren sounding simultaneously. In the final section, the principal theme is reiterated in various guises and sub-themes are further explored.

By New Christy Minstrels. By Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman. Arranged by Timothy Stapay. Broadway,Film/TV,Musical/Show,Pop,Singer/Songwriter,Standards. Score. 2 pages. Timothy Stapay #841772. Published by Timothy Stapay (A0.1247227).

This is an arrangement of Chim Chim Cher-ee from the Walt Disney movie, Mary Poppins.

Chim Chim Cher-ee is a song from Mary Poppins, the 1964 musical motion picture, and also is featured in the 2004 Mary Poppins musical.

The song won the 1964 Academy Award for Best Original Song. In 2005, Julie Andrews included this song as part of Julie Andrews Selects Her Favorite Disney Songs.  The song was written by Robert B. Sherman & Richard M. Sherman (the Sherman Brothers) who also won an Oscar and a Grammy Award for Mary Poppins' song score.

The song was inspired by one of the drawings of a chimney sweep created by Mary Poppins' screenwriter, Don DaGradi. When asked about the drawing by the Sherman Brothers, DaGradi explained the ancient British folklore attributed to sweeps and how shaking hands with one or touching their sleeve could bring a person good luck.  In their 1961 treatment, the Sherman Brothers had already amalgamated many of the P.L. Travers characters in the creation of Bert. His theme music became Chim Chim Cher-ee.

Lyrics:

Chim chiminey
Chim chiminey
Chim chim cher-ee
A sweep is as lucky
As lucky can be

Chim chiminey
Chim chiminey
Chim chim cher-oo
Good luck will rub off when
I shakes 'ands with you
Or blow me a kiss
And that's lucky too

Now as the ladder of life
'As been strung
You may think a sweep's
On the bottommost rung

Though I spends me time
In the ashes and smoke
In this 'ole wide world
There's no 'appier bloke

Chim chiminey
Chim chiminey
Chim chim cher-ee
A sweep is as lucky
As lucky can be

Chim chiminey
Chim chiminey
Chim chim cher-oo
Good luck will rub off when
I shakes 'ands with you

Chim chiminey
Chim chiminey
Chim chim cher-ee
A sweep is as lucky
As lucky can be

Chim chiminey
Chim chiminey
Chim chim cher-oo
Good luck will rub off when
I shakes 'ands with you

I choose me bristles with pride
Yes, I do
A broom for the shaft
And a brush for the flume

Up where the smoke is
All billered and curled
'Tween pavement and stars
Is the chimney sweep world

When the's 'ardly no day
Nor 'ardly no night
There's things 'alf in shadow
And 'alf way in light
On the roof tops of London
Coo, what a sight

Chim chiminey
Chim chiminey
Chim chim cher-ee
When you're with a sweep
You're in glad company

No where is there
A more 'appier crew

Than them wot sings
Chim chim cher-ee
Chim cher-oo
Chim chim cher-ee
Chim chim cher-ee chim cher-oo.

Composed by Johanna Senfter. This edition: Sheet music. Clarinet Library. Downloadable. Op. 57. Duration 18 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q6646. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q6646).

Key: A major.

The biography of the reserved and withdrawn composer Johanna Senfter is not characterized by any outstanding events or incidents. Born in Oppenheim on the Rhine on 27 November 1879, the composer chose to live on the Sparrhof, her family's estate, all her life until her death on 11 August 1961. Her amazing musicality already showed at an early age and was early recognized and actively encouraged by her parents. Max Reger repeatedly testified to his pupil's 'extraordinary compositional talent'. The works by Johanna Senfter are mainly influenced by Brahms and Reger, but she knew pretty soon how to further develop Reger's personal style individually in her own works without ever crossing the - widely drawn - boundaries of a harmony based on the functional theory. The time of creation of the Sonata for A clarinet (or viola) and piano Op. 57 can only be estimated: probably around 1925. There is only solid evidence of the place and date of the world premiere: Karlsruhe, 8 December 1932. This edition of the previously unprinted sonata is based on the composer's autograph kept at the library of the Cologne Academy of Music.

Dreams About the Future

The reason for writing was the poems of K. D. Balmont, two lines of which Prokofiev chose as an epigraph: “In every fleeting moment I see worlds, full of changing rainbow playâ€. In 1940-42, the famous avant-garde artist Alexander Rodchenko created a series of drawings illustrating “Fleetingnessâ€.“Fleetingness†is initially the author’s sketches, sketches, blanks, so to speak, a test of the pen, when musical images are created using minimal means and the search for one’s own language, a certain mood is conveyed, small picturesque etudes are drawn, paintings are also searched for and the possibility of conveying an almost theatrical action exclusively musical techniques. A little later, when a fair number of these short pieces had accumulated, Prokofiev added a few more, bringing the total number to 20. It was then that this suite was compiled, as an example of one of the first attempts to find a new style in music, which would later be called minimalism. Undoubtedly, the impetus for the creation of this 22nd opus was the piano preludes of Debussy, who had a huge influence on the subsequent development of academic music in the 20th century. My task in the orchestral transcription of this suite was, first of all, to make each sketch of this cycle visible using the means of a symphony orchestra. For this purpose, I initially provided each number of this suite with a specific name, in order to somehow indicate the path and arouse the imagination of the listeners. (As is known, only one piece of this cycle had a specific author's title - #7, Harp) Having started work on the orchestration, I had in advance the goal of addressing this arrangement to young musicians and young listeners.

Composed by Neal Endicott. Contemporary. Score and parts. 35 pages. Neal Endicott Music #1249. Published by Neal Endicott Music (A0.1030824).

This piece was originally titled Istn’t it Enough, drawing inspiration from the famous passage from The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. I changed the wording slightly to be more encompassing of different modes of perception (thought is a broader concept than sight and the word think created better melodic material than the word see, using the method described below) I provided an alternate title to more clearly convey the meaning behind the piece. That is; that the only church that I will ever need is the one I find in musical expression and in the beauty of the natural world. Though Adams’ meaning was meant to convey the primary reasoning for his atheism-a reason that I use as well-I also see it as an admonishment of our need for constant stimulation. Adams felt-and I feel-that people need to take the time to slow down and enjoy life: we need to enjoy the beauty of the garden (both literally and metaphorically). That, quite simply, is what this piece is (or at least what it is to me). Among the compositional techniques that I used in this piece is one that I have been using quite a lot. I call it crypto-serialism. The basic concept is that I will take a piece of text (the Douglas Adams quote, in this case) and convert each letter to a number between 0 and 11 and then convert those numbers to musical pitches, where 0 = C, 1 = C#, etc. The technique offers me a way to draw actual musical ideas from the text itself, which I see as a means of creating a deeper connection to the text. The piece is dedicated to the Four Horsemen of the Non-Apocolypse: Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, Sam Harris, and Daniel Dennett.

God Is Working His Purpose Out is an English Christian hymn. It was written in 1894 by Arthur Campbell Ainger as a tribute to the Archbishop of Canterbury, Edward White Benson. The original music for the hymn was written at the same time by Millicent D. Kingham but a number of other pieces of music have been used for the hymn in recent times.

The Refrain God Is Working His Purpose Out is based on Habakkuk 2:14; For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, As the waters cover the sea. The hymn references God being always at work to realize his will for the world and for humanity. It also references Philippians 2:12–13 in that God works in humanity to act according to his purpose. [Wikipedia]

[God is working his purpose out as year succeeds to year: God is working his purpose out, and the time is drawing near; nearer and nearer draws the time, the time that shall surely be, when the earth shall be filled with the glory of God as the waters cover the sea.] Verse 1
