This originally orchestral vocal standard was made popular by Duke Ellington and collaborators Billy Strayhorn, Adelaide Hall (who, while offstage, hummed an obligato while the band played the selection on-stage), and ostensibly Cab Calloway.  Research into the development of this tune is confused.  Both Calloway's and Hall's lyrics can be found, but there is no information where the words go.  In most recordings the singer, if present, lyricizes syllables rather than words.  In any case, this handbell arrangement catches the spirit of the standard, which was rife with instrumental improvizatiolns; some improvization is scored here.  The price listed allows you ten (10) copies of the handbell score.

Sugar Rum Cherry (Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy) is from Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn's album 'The Nutcracker Suite' (1960), reinterpreting the music of Tchaikovsky's classic Christmas ballet from 1892 and giving it a jazz twist. This arrangement for concert band is faithful to the original recording and score as much as possible and is suitable for more advanced bands, with important solos from key members of the ensemble. Satin Doll is a jazz standard written by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn with lyrics by Johnny Mercer. Written in 1953, the song has been recorded by many artists, incluing Ella Fitzgerald, 101 Strings, Dewey Redman, Chicago and Nancy Wilson. Johnny Mercer was often asked to write lyrics to already popular songs; the yrics to Satin Doll were written after the song was a hit in its instrumental version. This arrangement has been adapted from the jazz ensemble version by John Edmondson, retaining a short trumpet solo and incorporating the piano parts into the clarinets and vibraphone. Ellington used Satin Doll as the closing number in most of his concerts, why not pay tribute to The Duke and do the same at your next event?
