Published by Lisa L Ochoco (A0.559766). John Dowland (1562 ā€“ 1626) was a lutenist and singer in the Renaissance Period. The lute was a stringed instrument, most closely related to our guitar. He wrote quite a lot of music that is still played and sung by guitarists and singers today. Although his music was written for stringed instruments in general, many arrangers have adapted his works for wind instruments.This collection of 20 songs from his Third Book of Songs is arranged for flute quartet ā€“ 4 C flutes or 3 C flutes and alto. Most of these songs are rather short, so it is recommended that each song is played in its entirety at least twice. I arranged these songs so that the 1st flute always has the melody. To practice fairness in all parts, the parts should be rotated, to give each musician a chance to play the melody. This concerto is in the traditional three movement format with the first and third movements being fast and the middle movement slow.  The second and third movements are most like a blues work.  The first movement is a rondo format, is not particularly bluesy.  A Les Paulā„¢ guitar would play particularly well in this movement.  The second movement switches between the soloist as the distorted guitar sound to the vocalist as the clean guitar sound.  The final movement is happy, upbeat, and lively good time blues.  In the second and third movements in particular, the basses (cello, double bass) should be easily heard. At the end of the third movement, the precisionist on the drum set should improvise a loud, untimed measure, solo utilizing all the drums and cymbals in the set ending with four moderately paced and slowing beats on the snare drum.  A momentary pause, then the final chord. The guitarist will need at least one foot pedal for distortion enabling him/her to switch between a clean sound and a distorted sound.  The guitar should be the equivalent of a Fenderā„¢ Stratocaster or Telecaster guitar; a Gibsonā„¢ Les Paul would do nicely also.  The music is partially fingered leaving the player the opportunity to interpret the part.  The work is after the fashion of Chicago style blues of the 1960ā€™s.  The conductor and guitarist may wish to listen to recordings by the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, John Lee Hooker, John Mayall and the Blues Breakers, B.B. King, etc. to get a feel for the music of the 1960ā€™s blues bands.  It would be highly desirable to use an organ, for the 3rd movement, that can produce a Hammond B3ā„¢ with Leslie sound, as that instrument was widely used in blues of that period.  Although some of the notes notated as harmonics (h) in the score can be played as fretted notes, playing them as natural and artificial harmonics provides an interesting change of tonality.  The orchestral part is not particularly challenging.  The concerto is approx. 17 minutes in length.

Born in Nuremberg, Hans Leo Hassler (1564-1612) went to Venice at the age of 20 where he studied with Andrea Gabrieli, along with Andrea's nephew Giovanni, with whom he became friends. The friendship lasted after Hassler returned to Germany the following year, and there is evidence of at least one collaborative composition with Gabrieli. His final post was as Kapellmeister in Dresden, and after his death he was replaced by Michael Praetorius and Heinrich SchĆ¼tz. Hassler's four part motet 'Cantate Domino' is an exciting setting of the traditional Catholic text, taken from Psalm 96. It is well suited to being voiced by four trombones. I've never heard this and it is hard to imagine that it has never been performed in this manner. I have arranged it for horn quartet, although, two groups could paly it with one quartet playing all dynamics from mf through fff, and the other group (maybe off stage) playing everything from mp down to ppp/ At least give it a listen for a whole new way to perform the great composition.

Funny Like a Monkey is one of the many phrases coined by my then 16 year-old daughter in order to address the actions and well-intended attempts at humor by both her younger brother and her hopelessly antiquated father. What I love about these phrases ā€“ of which Funny Like a Monkey is but one of many ā€“ is their use of nonsequitur elevated to high verbal art. They are at once biting and humorous, and are filled with the sort of over-the-top verbal bravado that only a teenager, as the self-acknowledged epitome of hip, can get away with. Though Funny Like a Monkey is scored as a traditional piano quartet, it is in reality composed for string trio PLUS piano. Along with being part of the larger ensemble, the piano has a featured role in the piece: it is narrator, commentator, curmudgeon, critic, and emcee, as it introduces and comments upon the relative merits of the musical materials that comprise the work. The first movement is entitled Knock Yourself Out. The movementā€™s energy and exuberance, as well as its mercurial-shift-on-a-dime nature is a rather personal reference to the dedicatee. The second movement is entitled Flutterby. A spoonerism created (or at least favored) by my daughter, the reference is to a sort of macro- butterfly, a mega-mariposa, if you will, one of extraordinary beauty and delicacy that floats and drifts and shimmers in some imagined place. The third movement, Morph, With Apologies to J.B. refers to the rather obvious fact that the music keeps morphing in and out of the finale of Johannes Brahmsā€™ (J.B.ā€™s) Piano Quartet in G Minor, Op. 25. Iā€™m crazy about Brahmsā€™ piano quartets, and I have surrendered to the urge to mess with his pitch collections and thematic motives. The movement, with its musical puns, metamorphoses, and attempts at humor, is a perfect example of what might be referred to as funny like a monkey. Funny . . . is dedicated, with love, to Rachel Amy Greenberg on the occasion of her 16th birthday.
