Edmund Fitzgerald left port in Superior, Wisconsin. The 729-foot-long iron ore carrier, loaded with 26 thousand tons of taconite pellets for the auto industry, was bound for Detroit. Earlier that day, the weather service had issued a gale warning. This was not unusual, considering that gale storms are typical during November on Lake Superior. The Fitzgerald’s Captain, Ernest McSorley, and her 29-member crew headed northeast unaware of the maelstrom they would soon encounter. At around 2 a.m., Bernie Cooper, captain of the Arthur M. Andersen, another freighter which was following a few miles behind the Fitzgerald, radioed Captain McSorley to consult with him about the worsening storm. They had both decided to take a more northerly route along the Canadian shore, which they hoped would provide some shelter from the violent gale winds and waves. The Fitzgerald’s long-range radar stopped working the following day and was needed in order to avoid Six-Fathom Shoal, a shallow area of Lake Superior that could rupture the ship’s hull. McSorley soon radioed the Anderson to report that the Fitzgerald had sustained some topside damage...a fence rail down, two vents lost or damaged, and a starboard list. A list meant that the Fitzgerald was taking on too much water and was causing it to lean to one side. The short-range radar also stopped working, and the radio direction beacon from nearby Whitefish Point vanished. This would make it impossible for the Fitzgerald to reach the lee waters of Whitefish Bay and escape the 80 mph winds churning 20 to 30-foot waves. At 7:10 p.m. that night, First Mate Morgan Clark of the Andersen radioed the Fitzgerald to see how they were doing. Captain McSorley replied, We’re holding our own. This was the last contact anyone would have with the Fitzgerald. Shortly thereafter, the Edmund Fitzgerald disappeared from the Anderson’s radar screen. All 29 of her crew were lost on November 10th, 1975. The Edmund Fitzgerald chronicles the tragic final voyage of the well-known shipwreck in 4 movements; Embarkment, The Gales, Six-Fathom Shoal (We’re holding our own.) and Entombment-Dirge. The concerto makes use of several musical quotes. The first is Spanish Ladies, an English sea chantey, which appears in both the 1st and 3rd movements. The second is the funeral march theme from the 2nd movement of Beethoven’s 3rd Symphony which is heard in the 4th movement of the concerto. I took Gordon Lightfoot's beautiful song and turned it into my own piano arrangement. You will notice that the ship bell is heard throughout the song. This song is in six parts. The summon begins with the ship's bell ringing summoning everyone to gather for a story, Next is The Voyage Begins with a calm Lake Superior. The ship bell rings again announce heavy seas ahead and we are now into the next section called The Storm Begins. The bell continues to ring warning the crew of heavy waves. The next section is called The Gales of November. The intensity picks up. The bell rings with force calling for help. The next section is called The Sinking. You can hear the waves crashing into the ship as the bell continues to call for help. At the end the ship sinks as the bell continues to ring. There is one last ring as it settles on the bottom of Lake Superior. The last section is The Memorial. It is the stillness of the water after a storm with no sign of the Edmund Fitzgerald. The bell ring 29 times for each of the crew members. Enjoy.

Though certain details are sketchy depending on the historical source, the events depicted in the poetic text seem consistent with most sources. The text, taken from the writings of Ælfric of Eynsham and adapted by Frances E. F. Ward is as follows: The Danes came by great fleet of ship, under Hingwar, to plunder the Angles’ coast. Edmund the King will never bow in life unless first Hingwar bow to Christ, he said. He stood in hall raising no sword. Bound to the tree he called on Christ. Mad with rage, they bristled him with arrows and still with steadfast faith he called on Jesus Christ. Hingwar’s order, and the blow beheaded him; his soul departed joyfully to Christ. This is a bit of an oddity, admittedly, but in the event that you have a virtuoso pianist and a treble choir performing together at Christmas, it could be just what you're looking for! Such was the case in 2016, when Vancouver pianist Jane Coop was the guest of Elektra Women's Choir at their annual Chez Nous holiday concert. I created this piece in order to have something on the programme that was both Christmassy and yet involved the full-on pianism that would typically be on display at one of Jane's solo recitals. Somehow I managed to combine the melodies of not one but two familiar carols (Joy to the World and O Thou Joyful Day) with the flamboyant filigree and wild chromatics -- joyful in their own right! -- of Chopin's Étude Op. 10, No.8. The result, according to Elektra's artistic director, Morna Edmundson, is a fun, bright, and somewhat dizzying experience!

U.S. Field Artillery was composed in 1917, and the referenced edition was made Public Domain in 2019. The piece is catalogued as Volume 5, No. 78.Section titles (such as “First Strain� and “Trio�) follow the measure numbers provided by that edition. Each instrument follows its full-band part as often as possible, the only exception being Trombone covering the Euphonium/Baritone part. Because of this, Euphonium/Baritone would make a suitable substitute.
