Composed by Edward Elgar. Arranged by Diego Marani. Classical,Instructional,Patriotic,Romantic Period,Standards. Score and part. 15 pages. Diego Marani #644792. Published by Diego Marani (A0.1039918).

The best known March of the set, it had its premiere in Liverpool on 19 October 1901, with Elgar conducting the Liverpool Orchestral Society. The Trio contains the tune known as Land of Hope and Glory. In 1902 the tune was re-used, in modified form, for the Land of hope and glory section of his Coronation Ode for King Edward VII. The words were further modified to fit the original tune, and the result has since become a fixture at the Last Night of the Proms, and an English sporting anthem. In the United States, the Trio section Land of Hope and Glory of March No. 1 is often known simply as Pomp and Circumstance or as The Graduation March and is played as the processional tune at virtually all high school and some college graduation ceremonies. It was first played at such a ceremony on 28 June 1905, at Yale University, where the Professor of Music Samuel Sanford had invited his friend Elgar to attend commencement and receive an honorary doctorate of music. Elgar accepted, and Sanford made certain he was the star of the proceedings, engaging the New Haven Symphony Orchestra, the College Choir, the Glee Club, the music faculty members, and New York musicians to perform two parts from Elgar's oratorio The Light of Life and, as the graduates and officials marched out, Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1. Elgar repaid the compliment by dedicating his Introduction and Allegro to Sanford later that year. The tune soon became de rigueur at American graduations, used primarily as a processional at the opening of the ceremony. This arrangement for bassoon with piano is suitable for classroom, repertoire and recital.

Composed by Sir Edward Elgar (1857-1934). Arranged by Stephen Levintow. 19th Century,Romantic Period,Wedding. 6 pages. Cypress Publishing #1037607. Published by Cypress Publishing (A0.1458677).

Sir Edward Elgar’s Variations on an Original Theme, commonly known as Enigma Variations, may be the most wonderful musical tribute to friendship ever composed. Each of the fourteen variations is headed with initials or a code name of a family member or friend, with the last one being Elgar himself.

The best known variation is the ninth, entitled Nimrod. It represents Augustus Jaeger, Elgar’s close friend and editor at his publisher Novello & Company. In the Bible, Nimrod is referred to as “the mighty hunter”, thus identifying with Jaeger (Jäger), meaning “hunter” in German. The stately and serene variation expresses the depth of the composer’s feelings for his friend, and is often performed separately on solemn occasions. This arrangement is based on the original orchestral score, and Elgar’s own piano reduction, both published by Novello in 1899. Technically it is not too difficult, though with some double stopping to complete the harmonies and for fullness of sound.

CYPRESS PUBLISHING is pleased to be the imprint for arrangements for string ensemble by Stephen Levintow. He is a free lance professional violist and violinist specializing in chamber music, who began making string quartet and trio arrangements for wedding, party and corporate events, to expand the repertory or to improve on existing versions. Selections include unusual pieces by both familiar and lesser-known composers, plus standard classical and popular favorites.

The goal is to produce high-quality, musically satisfying arrangements faithful to the composer’s original material, yet sight-readable in most cases by working professionals or intermediate to advanced students. The full range of normal string technique is employed, while avoiding unnecessary technical complexity. Melodic material is distributed throughout the four voices where appropriate, to maintain listener and performer interest. All parts and scores are set in Sibelius© software format, with careful attention to legibility and page turns.

Composed by Edward Elgar. Arranged by Greg Bartholomew. 20th Century,Concert,Standards,World. Score and parts. 22 pages. Burke & Bagley #4793345. Published by Burke & Bagley (A0.787361).

This is an orchestra arrangement of Elgar's choral setting of the Tennyson poem, There Is Sweet Music.  Scored for single winds, horn in F, and strings.  1111 1000 Strings.  Duration approx. 3'45.

Among the best-known compositions of Sir Edward Elgar (1857-1934) are his orchestral works, the Enigma Variations, the Pomp and Circumstance Marches, concertos for violin and cello, and two symphonies among them. He is also known for his choral works, including The Dream of Gerontius, chamber music and songs.

Elgar’s 1907 set of Four Part Songs, choral miniatures for unaccompanied mixed chorus, are some of the most challenging in the repertoire.  The first of these, setting a poem by Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1809-1892), There Is Sweet Music presents a particularly special challenge to the singers, as apparently the first music ever published composed in two simultaneous keys.  The men are in G major throughout, while the women are in A-flat major, two harmonically distant keys.  Nevertheless, the music never sounds particularly dissonant and the effect is gentle.

Choral conductor Dr. Gary D. Cannon noted an orchestral quality in Elgar’s choral writing and suggested the possibility that There Is Sweet Music might be transcribed for orchestra, giving the men’s parts to the strings and the women’s parts to the winds.  Composer Greg Bartholomew accepted this challenge and produced this arrangement.

Edward Elgar composed his Variations on an Original Theme, Op. 36, popularly known as the Enigma Variations, between October 1898 and February 1899. It is an orchestral work comprising fourteen variations on an original theme. Nimrod (Adagio) was the 9th variation. The name of this variation refers to Augustus J. Jaeger, who was employed as a music editor by the London publisher Novello & Co. He was a close friend of Elgar's, giving him useful advice but also severe criticism, something Elgar greatly appreciated. Elgar later related how Jaeger had encouraged him as an artist and had stimulated him to continue composing despite setbacks.
