Although I'd originally planned to arrange the Hamburg tune for this lovely Isaac Watts hymn, which is the tune I've always known, I found myself drawn to the alternate tune: Rockingham. The stately beauty of this tune is a wonderful setting for Watts' hymn words.

Influenced by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, the Irish composer Sir Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924) developed an English Romantic musical language of his own. This is noticeable especially in his three Latin motets in which a typically 'English' tone prevails which is characterized by extremely flowing melodies, smooth harmonies and great singability and rather avoids any stark contrasts. Together with Edward Elgar and Hubert Parry, Stanford greatly contributed to the renovation of English music. These three compositions are perfect for church services and concerts.

C’est sous l’influence de Mendelssohn que le compositeur irlandais Sir Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924) a développé le langage musical romantique anglais qui lui est propre. Il règne en effet dans ces trois motets un ton typiquement “anglais�, caractérisé par ses mélodies, son harmonie et son côté chantant. Avec Elgar et Parry, il a largement contribué au renouveau de la musique anglaise.
