Three Pieces for Beginner Guitarists (Acoustic or Electric) by Dan Jones Presented in notes, TAB and easy chords (www.danjonesguitarist.com) As an active guitar teacher, I find that many beginner pupils want to learn either acoustic (steel string) guitar or electric guitar. I have also found a lack of quality resources in these styles which have musical interest, and which lay out some of the necessary technical and musical foundations for future learning. I composed these three little pieces for my own young students. They are played by those using their right-hand fingers, and a plectrum and I’ve found them to be very popular in both lessons and performance. The pieces can be learnt in any order (I have a slight preference for starting my pupils with D-Day Rock - the third in the collection). Below is an outline of the pedagogy behind them (1) Sore Finger Blues This is a simple twelve-bar blues which uses a combination of open strings and notes at the third and second frets. It can be played with a straight or swung rhythm. It is effective at a slow tempo for those needing time to place the fretting hand fingers. The main technical challenge is in bars 10 and 22 where the player moves the third finger between the G and A on string 1. Although this is traditionally an advanced technique, I’ve found my students find it comfortable, as long as the fingering outlined in the notes is followed. The chords are dominant (with major thirds). These clash against the minor pentatonic scale in a way which is typical of the style. The chords are quite simple for beginners. I have opted for a D5 power-chord in bars 9 & 21 which is easier than the usual D chord (which also works perfectly well). Plectrum players should be sure to anchor the plucking hand, either with the side of the hand resting on the bridge, or a finger against the scratch plate of the guitar. Fingerstyle players can anchor either with a finger touching the scratch plate of the guitar, or by resting the thumb on a bass string when the fingers are plucking, or vice versa. This is more typical of classical style. (2) Cross-String Traffic This piece was conceived as a fingerstyle piece, although it can be played using a plectrum. The challenge for plectrum players is to cross the strings smoothly. It is for this reason that the fretting hand is relatively simple so that learners can concentrate on the plucking hand. Players are also encouraged to press down the index finger on string 2 at the correct angle to allow the first string to resonate. Chords have once again been chosen to suit less-experienced fingers; therefore, I have opted for Dm6 instead of the more common Dm (a very tricky chord for beginners). Players should go for maximum resonance and notes played at fret 3 could be fretted with either fingers 3 or 4. (3) D-Day Rock This piece is made nearly entirely of open strings and third fret notes. Where there is string crossing, the music allows the player ‘thinking time’ to change accordingly. Teachers and learners can decide with which finger to press the third fret notes. The rhythmic complexities from bar 13 to the end pose no problems once players have the sound of the piece in their ear. Once again, chords have been selected for ease of playing. The Gm/D chord can be played with a 3-string barre (often quite easy for beginners where no fretted bass note is required) or using three separate fingers. The pedal D sounds effective musically. I have presented these pieces as ensemble works with large groups of beginners. Players and audiences alike have been very receptive! SUSSER DIE GLOCKEN NIE KLINGEN (Sweeter the bells never sound) - 4 GUITARS/LARGE ENSEMBLE
For Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar.

Derek Hasted writes This delightful tune is a traditional Thuringian Folk Melody, and has become a well-loved German Carol with the English translation Sweeter the bells never sound than at Christmas time.

This piece of music is ideal for a novice mixed-ability guitar ensemble - it would be an ideal instrumental for a School Christmas concert, but is also in a good key for accompanying singers.

Two Guitar 1 parts are provided - you can use either or both, depending on the skill of the players in your ensemble. Guitar 1b is all first (or second) position, whereas Guitar 1a is all in VII position - the part score is thoroughly fingered.

The other parts are all straightforward.

But as well as being a fantastic piece for a school concert, it is also great in an adult concert, since it has immediate audience appeal and needs minimal preparation in experienced hands.

I hope you enjoy performing this!

PORTSMOUTH - 4 GUITARS or LARGE ENSEMBLE
For Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar.

Derek Hasted writes Although this piece was made famous by Mike Oldfield, it first appeared in John Playford’s “The Dancing Master†in 1701, and also found fame in the hands of Ralph Vaughan Williams.

My arrangement starts with a slow, teasing, introduction, and introduces the famous melody very slowly and gently. “What Shall We Do With The Drunken Sailor†also makes a few appearances before we let the brakes off and burst into the tune that many people know.

The music isn’t hard to play, and each line has some music interest, though only Guitar 1 has to venture up the neck.

It’s ideal for a mixed ability ensemble, and runs at nearly five minutes, to make a substantial concert item that builds up and up.

This arrangement was a firm favourite with the Hampshire Guitar Orchestra (HAGO) and their audiences.

I hope you enjoy this piece as much as HAGO did!

PATAPAN - traditional carol - 4 GUITARS/LARGE ENSEMBLE
For Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar.

There are TWO ARRANGEMENTS in this one edition.

Derek Hasted writes This Burgundian Carol, first published in 1720, usually has four verses in the French version and three in the English. This arrangement has three verses, all in slightly different styles.

The melody and the onomatopoeia in the lyrics are together meant to symbolise the fife (“Ture-lure-luâ€) and the drum (“Pata-pata-panâ€).

In both arrangements Guitar One has melody, and it fits nicely in a mix of IV and V position. There is no fingering, because your ensemble might want to choose between two different approaches...

A less experienced ensemble might prefer to venture up the neck just to reach for the A and B notes, and return to the first position as soon as possible...

A more experienced group might want to stay up the neck to get a more rounded tone throughout.
Depending on your choice of fingering, slurs might be possible to improve the flow.

There are two versions of the lower parts.
In the first arrangement, in “SATB†style, Guitar 4 plays the bass; Guitar 3 provides, in the three verses, percussion, a choral countermelody, and finally a Hurdy-Gurdy style drone; Guitar provides a countermelody.
In the second arrangement, the roles rotate at the end of each verse, so that all the accompanying players have three very different verses to play. Guitar 1 stays with the tune, because in a mixed ability ensemble, moving the tune about tends to highlight any weaknesses. This arrangement highlights the strengths!

Percussion (the X-headed notes) works well if you tap the guitar near the bridge to get a deep bass drum.

At the end, the brave amongst you can shout “Patapan†to bring the piece to a surprise conclusion...

I hope you enjoy this piece!

COWKEEPER'S TUNE (TV's Woodentops theme) - 4 GUITARS/LARGE ENSEMBLE
For Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar.

Derek Hasted writes This arrangement is taken from a String Nonet version (2 first violins, 2 second violins, 2 violas, 2 cellos and 1 double bass).

It makes a great quartet for a guitar ensemble of modest ability, and those with more experience will be able to generate a wonderful soundscape with a rich clear overall sound.

The pitch range of the original has to be compressed onto the pitch range of a guitar ensemble and I’ve achieved this by raising the lower voices, rather than altering the top voice, where the piece calls for a lighter texture.

The dynamics of the original are retained in my arrangement, but the fingering is left to the players... Playing the lower parts up the neck will give a rich, cello-like, sound, but a first position performance will be robust and will use many familiar guitar shapes.

This is a charming, gentle, pastoral piece and the sweet sound of the guitar suits it well.

Those UK players of a certain age might just remember that this music introduced The Woodentops, a children’s string-puppet TV series which ran in black and white from 1955 till 1957, and was regularly repeated until 1973.

I hope you enjoy playing this piece!

OVER THE WAVES - GUITAR DUET
For Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar.
There is also a version for Flute and Guitar published separately

This is the tune that everyone has heard, and no-one knows its name... It makes it perfect for concerts!

Derek Hasted writes It’s featured in Octopussy and Mary Poppins, it’s been on Sesame Street, it’s famous for being Trapeze Music in circus scenes. You might even recognise it from a Chet Atkins guitar record, on which this arrangement is styled.

This arrangement is based on one I wrote for my
Guitar Workshop - it's really easy to play...

There are two versions of the Part Score in this edition...
Version 1 is ideal for a Student/Teacher duet - the Teacher plays the chords, and the student takes the tune.
Version 2 is great for a performance at any level between two players with comparable tone and volume - it’s written as a Call & Response version, which, just like the circus trapeze artists, move from left to right, crossing over in mid-air...

I always keep fingering to a minimum, but skilled players will find the melody line fits almost perfectly into VII position.

I hope you enjoy playing this piece
