Amazing Grace - Intermediate piano solo Arranged by Elena FortinLately, I have been working on arrangements and videos of songs that I consider to be important either in the way they touch listeners, in how they are used, or if they have stood the test of time.Amazing Grace is a beautiful, traditional hymn with well-known lyrics penned by John Newton. The original hymn was published in 1779, with the words written in 1772. This piece is one of those songs that can be used for many different reasons. It is used in worship services, as a hymn of praise and faith, as celebration of life lived, and as a prayer of thanksgiving.  My arrangement is for the intermediate player. The arrangement is simple, but should be played expressively. Each repetition of the hymn is slightly different, with the second repetition using the harmonic structure but introducing a new invented melody by me. (You can hum the melodic line of Amazing Grace over the top of this second repetition and you'll see what I mean!) The very last repetition is played allargando which means slightly slower, and more broadly. Enjoy those left hand octave notes and full chords! Shallow (from A Star Is Born)This is a piano solo arrangement by Elena Fortin, written for the advanced intermediate performer. This piece is from the movie A Star is Born and is performed by the stars of the movie: Lady Gaga (aka Stefani Germanotta) and Bradley Cooper. Written in a collaboration by Stefani Germanotta, Anthony Rossomando, Andrew Wyatt, and Mark Ronson.I choose to arrange pieces that have special meaning to me, or that I consider to be timeless and important. This one is a departure from my usual arrangements--I usually choose pieces that have stood the test of time; but even though this piece was released in 2018, I never fail to enjoy performances of this! (I have never seen the movie, although I have seen numerous YouTube videos of this being performed by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper!) There is something magical in the melody and in the emotion that they feel when they play and perform this song.This advanced intermediate arrangement is presented with a six bar intro and then the melody is introduced in the middle part of the piano. The left hand has flowing chords and arpeggios, while the melody is written out in an easy-to-read syncopated rhythm that mimics the vocalists. A return to the intro follows, with a more decorated melody in the upper part of the piano. The chorus is introduced with strong, four-note chords and a more chord-like structure to the left hand. The bridge introduces some new interesting rhythms and arpeggios in both hands and ends with a descending cross hand arpeggio. The piece ends with a restatement of the verse, but again told with different inflections.I hope that you enjoy this arrangement!Elena.

Her Mom plays viola and asked if she could accompany her for her end-of-year performance. I wrote this arrangement for the pair of them. It's fun to make music together as a family!The piano part is an easy - early intermediate arrangement. The viola part is written for an intermediate player. The ending could be quite challenging with some quick sixteenth note scales for the viola player that talk to the sixteenth notes in the piano part. The ensemble is a little bit challenging--I would suggest that the piano player learn their part really well--there are some rhythm patterns that need to be solid to play it with another player.The violist should listen carefully to the left hand of the piano player--that is where you should hear the heartbeat of the piece!Enjoy!Elena Fortin

The lyrics refer to how quickly time passes and is a lovely reminder to take each day as it comes and make the most of it.The arrangements I am working on this year are songs that I consider to be important. This song is one of my favourites--I loved the Kansas version of it--with the violin, voice, and two guitars.My arrangement is written in 4/4 time with an almost constant left hand arpeggio bass as a nod to the guitar arrangement. The verse and chorus are repeated three times, each time a little bit differently and explores the full range of the piano. I write this for intermediate to early advanced players--it is a good challenge! There are tricky double-note passages, and some interesting syncopated rhythms. I chose to write this song in 12/8 time, so the left hand triplets are accompanying the melody throughout. I love our new place, but it seems really strange to see Christmas decorations going up in December and green everywhere!! I thought I would get in the mood for holiday celebrations by sitting down and playing old Christmas favourites. Silent Night is one of those beautiful carols where the peace and spirit of the season just settle in your heart. As I sat and played, the arrangement formed itself in my mind and in my fingers. I worked backwards on this arrangement--normally I sit down with an outline of the music in mind and work from there. This time, I played the arrangement (luckily I was recording!) and then transcribed my own arrangement. It was a new and interesting way to work and fun to dive into my mind and finger wanderings! This arrangement explores some different harmonies in the intro and the outro. The verse and chorus are repeated four times in this arrangement. The first time sticks pretty close to the original, with some suspensions and interesting rhythms thrown in to keep it interesting. The second repetition introduces several countermelodies and different right hand harmonies. The third repetition is a sweet melody in the treble register of the piano. The fourth repetition is an improvisation based on the harmonic structure of the verse and chorus. I hope you enjoy this arrangement. I hope that playing it brings you peace and joy during the holiday season. Elena.

Like many others, in these challenging times, I turn to music. ...like a small boat...sending big waves into motion Fight Song, written by Rachel Platten and Davve Bassett, has become an anthem of faith and belief for any person that is going through a challenge and brings comfort to many. The song was recorded in 2014 and won iHeartRadio's Music Award for Best Lyrics. When I pick songs to arrange, they are often ones that play over and over in my brain. I've been working on this one for several weeks. My arrangement is for the early advanced player. The arrangement starts quite simply but builds and builds into powerful repetitions of the chorus with arpeggios in the left hand and in the right hand and lots of fun crashing chords.
