Large Ensemble Alto Saxophone,Bassoon,Cello,Clarinet,Flute,Multi-Percussion,Tenor Saxophone,Trumpet,Tuba,Viola,Violin - Level 3 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.802573

Composed by Ronald Binge. Arranged by Edrich Siebert & Richard Pollen & Peet du Toit. Contemporary. Score and parts. 40 pages. Peet du Toit #5798651. Published by Peet du Toit (A0.802573).

Elizabethan Serenade is a light music composition by Ronald Binge. When it was first played by the Mantovani orchestra in 1951, it was simply titled Andante cantabile, although the original orchestral manuscript parts in Ronald Binge's own hand show the title The Man in the Street (possibly the title of an early television documentary). The name was altered by the composer to reflect the post-war optimism of a new Elizabethan Age that began with the accession of Queen Elizabeth II in February 1952. The Günter Kallmann Choir also made it famous by recording it in the Kango Caves in South Africa.

Here is an interesting combination of instruments to give it a different touch in your presentation. Enjoy!

SKU: A0.1194118

Composed by Colin Eatock. A Cappella,Classical,Contemporary,Early Music,Renaissance. Octavo. 58 pages. Colin Eatock Music #793552. Published by Colin Eatock Music (A0.1194118).

Four movements; a cappella SATB choir or quartet; ca. 9 min.

The composer writes: I almost titled this work “Four Elizabethan Love Songs.†However, while such a title might be appropriate for a group of songs about the joys of loving relationships, the texts I have chosen do not all fit that mould. Of the four, only Christopher Marlowe’s seductive “The Passionate Shepherd to His Love†and Shakespeare’s wise and insightful Sonnet 116 address requited love. On the other hand, John Donne’s “The Message†is a “hate-songâ€, an angry poem about love gone wrong, bursting with bitter recriminations. And Elizabeth I’s “When I Was Fair and Young,†is wistful and full of regret: the Queen realizes that her own youthful pride has obstructed her opportunities for happiness. Together, these poems offer four dramatically contrasting views about love.

By Ronald Binge. By Ronald Binge. Arranged by BRIAN W. COPPING. 20th Century,Chamber,Contest,Festival. 20 pages. EMK Music #803088. Published by EMK Music (A0.1204617).

Arranged for 2 Alto's, Tenor and Baritone with alternative parts 3 and 4 so it can be played by four alto's.
In spite of its title, ‘Elizabethan Serenade’ is a comparatively modern composition which was first performed by Mantovani in 1951.  Originally called ‘Andante Cantabile’, Ronald Binge changed the name to reflect post-war optimism when Queen Elizabeth 11 came to the throne in 1952. Its popularity as a piece of light music and as a theme tune was further enhanced when lyrics were added in English and in several other European Languages.

Banjo (5-string) - Intermediate-Advanced - Digital Download

SKU: M0.20669EB

Composed by Steven J. Harvey. Banjo: Clawhammer, Solos and Duets. Folk. E-book and online audio. Mel Bay Publications - Digital Sheet Music #20669EB. Published by Mel Bay Publications - Digital Sheet Music (M0.20669EB).

ISBN 9781619110403. 8.75x11.75 inches.

Here is a book of tunes from the Elizabethan era-the great period of English song-set in tablature for the clawhammer banjo. At first glance, it is true, the songs of Shakespeare-s day and the mountain banjo seem to be worlds apart. But the musical traditions are, in fact, related, as Elizabethan songs are the old world cousins of mountain tunes. As a result, Elizabethan tunes are a natural way to extend the mountain banjo repertoire for intermediate and advanced players.

Their pedigree, their modal feel, the lilting rhythms, and the ease with which they can be adapted to the banjo argue the case. At the same time, they open the possibility for new sounds-in particular new rhythms-for the old instrument, pushing the banjo beyond unnatural limitations and giving it a new voice. Each section of the book is organized around a traditional mountain tuning, with a mountain song serving as a model of that tuning, illuminating the relationship between the two musical worlds. The Bard's Banjo is the first banjo instruction book devoted to the repertoire of Elizabethan song. Includes access to online audio.

ELIZABETHAN SERENADE - 6 Guitars or 5+Bass
For Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar.

Derek Hasted writes Ronald Binge was a fantastic composer, but few people know of his works. He worked as an arranger for Mantovani, and was, they say, responsible for “The Mantovani Sound†- that cascade of overlapping waterfalls of strings.

His Elizabethan Serenade is nothing less that utterly charming. My arrangement is modelled on the version I wrote for the Hampshire Guitar Orchestra (which played 4 different sizes of guitar). This arrangement is one tone higher, and fits nicely onto 6 classical or acoustic guitars (or a large ensemble). Guitar 6 is in treble and bass clefs, so one can substitute a double bass or electric bass, or thicken up the existing part with a deeper sound.

My arrangement is mixed ability, almost all the music is early intermediate, but the top line is perhaps intermediate.

There are plenty of dynamics which make the music come alive, but there is no fingering - almost all of it can be played in First Position, and a gentle mellow sound will create the most amazing accompaniment which the audience will be convinced has a hidden echo somewhere.

When my guitar orchestra played this in concert, you could hear a pin drop - it is a wonderful piece and deserves to be played far more often.

I hope YOU enjoy playing this piece!

Lady Hammond’s Alman
(Lady Laiton’s Alman)

I first came across a tune called Lady Hammond’s Alman in a book of country dances. It comprised just a melody. As I played it on mandolin I was adding plenty of double stops, and I wrote these down. I then added a bass line. Later, I discovered the piece to be a composition of the Elizabethan lutenist, John Dowland. Later still, I found the piece under the name, Lady Laiton’s Alman, but I have retained the Lady Hammond title simply because that is how I first encountered it!

An alman (aka almand, almand, allemande etc) is a dance in duple time. Thoinot Arbeau, in his Orchesography of 1589, states that ‘The Alman is a simple, rather sedate dance, familiar to the Germans, and, I believe, one of our oldest since we are descended from them.’ (‘Allemande’ means ‘German’ in French.)
