This is another composition which was written for and inspired by the music/poetry collaboration project Severn Spirit with poetry by Jeff Phelps and Simon Fletcher c.2002. (Very) loosely inspired by 'The Feather Theme' from the Forrest Gump Suite by Alan Silvestri, the piece was intended to be a 'light and airy' portrayal of the river severn.

Published by JMS Composer (A0.749400). Petrichor is the scientific name given to the earthy smell of rain coming into contact with the ground. The work starts with the image of the rain just beginning to occur, with finger snaps, leg slaps, and the sound of palms rubbing together simulating the rain fall. The music starts at a slow tempo and increases over the length of the piece as the downpour accelerates. By the end, one might even imagine walking out onto a porch to enjoy watching the rain continue to fall, as it offers up even a moment of peace.From a rehearsal standpoint, Petrichor is not technically demanding. It focuses on the patterns that occur during rainfall, using them to help build towards the exciting conclusion. Working each pattern independently before bringing them together is very helpful, as it will help lock in the mix of rhythms. The opening does not need to feel rushed and should be allowed to breathe, and each increase in the tempo should not be telegraphed, but should flow from the previous tempo. The ending combines straight eighths and sixteenths with a running triplet pattern between them; the triplet pattern should feel like it sits on top of everything else, almost floating along like a cloud.This was a pleasure to compose, and I hope you enjoy rehearsing and performing Petrichor.

I'm pretty rubbish with titles for the music that I create unfortunately (95% of the time the music comes first and a title is 'assigned' after completion, with the music inspiring the title rather than the other way around) and this piece was no exception. To me, the piece felt like it was replicating a bird in motion.

Originally composed for soprano voice and piano, it was reworked as a solo piano work for the album. 'The Musician' (the quarterly magazine from the Musicians' Union) kindly described this composition as outstanding and a stunning piece, which boasts a charming melody and gratifying flourishes.

It's strange how well certain tracks 'perform' on certain platforms; Butterfly currently has just over 187K plays on Soundcloud, outperforming all of my other work by about 500%! The other 'fun fact' is that I opened it up to the Facebook community to title this piece, so I can't take credit for that part. It also became the 'soundtrack' to a wonderful short film by Eirini Xyda-Kouka in 2016, so it's had quite a journey.

This work was probably the easiest composition to title because it was literally written as I was watching the snow fall past the window one evening. For the same reason it was also one of the easiest pieces to create as I was able to capture something in music that was very visual.
