SKU: MQ.8492-22E

Composed by MeeAe Cecilia Nam and Theodore Gouvy. Instrument part. 5 pages. E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital #8492-22E. Published by E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital (MQ.8492-22E).

French.

Gouvy was known for writing some of the most beautiful melodies of the Romantic period. His style is a combination of German forms and an early French romantic harmonic structure. His writing for the piano in the songs is totally unified in mood and description with the voice, just as the piano is in Schubertā€™s songs. The equal partnership of the vocal line and piano interact closely to bring the poetry vividly into life with unimaginable artistic heights and unbridled passion.
This volume includes Gouvy songs set to 18 poems of Philippe Desportes (1546ā€“1606), and 18 poems of Moritz Hartmann (1821ā€“1872). The elements of Romantic love poetry, such as enchanting love and its pain, and the personifying of nature, are fluently described with a great sensitivity in both voice and piano. Gouvyā€™s melody stir up the imagination because of his special treatment of words through a distinguishable and melodious vocal line, and his story telling and poetic treatment and development of the piano accompaniment. His compositional artistry places him in the upper echelons of art-song composers. One should note that Gouvy had a special fondness for the 16th Century poetry of La PlĆ©iade (a group of Renaissance French poets, led by PiĆØrre de Ronsard (1524ā€“1585). Desportes was truly the heir to Ronsard; however his work, when compared to that of Ronsard, is filled with greater abstraction and greater fluidity. Desportes seems to avoid any of the passionate anger that is occasionally characteristic of La PlĆ©iade. This may be an indication that Desportes lived in a less distressed time. It also seems necessary to point out that he learned much in his early career by copying and studying the earlier works of La PlĆ©iade. This has led some scholars to label him as a plagiarist, but it is important to realize that all the members of La PlĆ©iade copied from each other when they wished to learn something new, and truly understand the style of the other poets in the group.
Gouvyā€™s only choice of poems from his contemporaries, were the works of Moritz Hartmann (1821ā€“1872), a good friend of Gouvyā€™s. Much of his poetry was strongly political in support of freedom of the individual. He traveled to Leipzig in 1845, but when the authorities discovered a volume of patriotic poems entitled Kelch und Schwert (Chalice and Sword), he fled to Belgium and France. It is at this time that he possibly met ThĆ©odore Gouvy. Eighteen poems of Hartmann were translated from German to French by the French poet, Adolph Larmande, of whom very little is known.
Pierre Toussaint Adolphe Larmande seems to have been a rather obscure poet and musician. We know that he taught music theory at the Paris Conservatory at the same time Anton Reicha and Michele Carafa were on the faculty. We also know that in 1847 he married an English woman by the name of Marie Caroline Bradley. There are random documents, such as a Certificate of Arrival in London, England, in 1837, but there are no birth and death dates given, and that includes his obituary notice.

SKU: A0.1011417

Composed by Willilam Herschel. Arranged by B H Suits. Baroque. 9 pages. B H Suits #3372929. Published by B H Suits (A0.1011417).

William Hershel (1738-1822) is best known for his scientific work including the discovery of infrared radiation, the planet Uranus and several of its moons, among other important discoveries.  Born in Hanover into a musical family he spent his early years as a professional musician, composer, and conductor in England.  This arrangement for woodwind quintet is based on the delicate slow movement from his orchestral symphony number 20, written in 1763.  Hershel's music is described as either late Baroque or pre-classical. This three minute arrangement is well suited for students new to woodwind quintet music as well as for a relaxing interlude as part of a more advanced program.

SKU: A0.1442833

Composed by Catharina Josepha Sidney Pratten Edited by Keith Terrett. Arranged by Keith Terrett. 19th Century,Classical,Contest,Festival,Instructional,Romantic Period. Score. 7 pages. Keith Terrett #1022769. Published by Keith Terrett (A0.1442833).

Catharina Josepha Pratten (15 November 1824 – 10 October 1895) was a German guitar virtuoso, composer, and teacher, also known as Madame Sidney Pratten. A legendary composer, virtuosa, editor and teacher ( among her pupils were the daughters of Queen Victoria!), she was born in Cologne/ Germany as Catharina Josepha Pelzer in 1824, toured as child prodigy with Giulio Regondi, married flutist and composer Robert Pratten and lived then until her death in 1895 in London.

She was born Catharina Josepha Pelzer in Mülheim on 15 November 1824,[1] the daughter of the German guitarist and music teacher Ferdinand Pelzer. Her family moved to England in 1829.  On 24 September 1854, she married the English flautist Robert Sidney Pratten.

Catharina began touring in Europe from the age of eight, and by 1844 was well known in England as a composer and guitar teacher. She soon established her school - Madame Sidney Pratten's Guitar School - and published tutorials, including Guitar School: a Book of Methods (1859) and Learning the Guitar: Simplified (1874), which advocated the use of alternative tuning in E major. Her pupils included Queen Victoria’s daughters Louise, Princess of Wales and Beatrice, and the actor, singer, guitarist, and composer Ernest Shand.

She composed some 250 works, most of them for solo guitar or voice and guitar. Heike Matthiesen has recorded some of the guitar pieces, including the variations on Carnaval de Venise, the two Fairy Sketches, and the Serenade.

Her residence in London was 22 Dorset Street, Portman Square, where she lived after the death of her husband in 1868, and where she died on 10 October 1895. Her sister, Giulia Pelzer (also a teacher), continued to run the guitar school after Catharina’s death. Catharina is buried at Brompton Cemetery, London.[

She owned many guitars herself and selected others for her pupils, often with her label inside. One - in splendid condition - was advertised for sale in The Times in 1939.

SKU: A0.843718

Composed by Traditional. Arranged by Debbie Warren. Folk,Traditional. Octavo. 7 pages. Keep Calm and Keep Singing #450402. Published by Keep Calm and Keep Singing (A0.843718).

A fishing song from the North East of England, this became popular as the theme tune to 1970ā€™s TV show When the Boat Comes In. However, there is also another melody (in the minor key) also believed to originate from the North East but which was collected by Cecil Sharp in Berkshire. I have combined both melodies giving one to the sops and the other to the altos. Each section then forms an ostinato accompaniment while the other is singing the tune. These ā€œDanceā€ ā€œSingā€ notes although written as dotted minims are to be performed short and light ā€“ like bells. The song also works best with a slight northern accent ā€“ particularly the short northern ā€˜aā€™ vowel on the word Dance and in the phrase ā€œWhen the boat comes inā€. NB Although this is written for 4 parts the second alto is optional and the arrangement works just as well without it for SSA choirs. FREE resources are available (backing track, teach tracks) just email keepcalmkeepsinging@gmail.com with proof of purchase Easy Level Duration: 3'30.

Composed by Theophilus Bucher (1802 - 1871). Arranged by James Strauss. Concert,Halloween,Romantic Period. Score and part. 29 pages. James Strauss #5806083. Published by James Strauss (A0.1035225).

The flutist, composer and professor of music Theophilus Bucher had a settled and successful life after his immigration to England, where he is reported as newly arrived in 1831. We are lucky to have a monument at his grave in Edinburgh (in the Dean Cemetery) which gives both his date and place of birth, as well as the date and place of his demise. Theophile Bucher was born at Schlestadt, Alsace, on March 13, 1802, and died at Edinburgh, December 20, 1871.  The obituary published in Signale fĆ¼r die Musikalische Welt, in March 1872, which states he came from Naples, from French parents. That obituary, although in German, gives his name in the French form of Theophile Boucher, the only source which gives this spelling for his surname. Certainly, his early successes and earliest publications seem to be in Naples, although he is reported in other parts of Italy as well.

Grand fantasia and brilliant variations: for the flute, on Paganini's air The witches dance, with an accompaniment for the pianoforte. Composed & dedicated to his friend G. Rudall Esqre., by T. Bucher. This publication was listed as new in the last month in October 1832 in the Harmonicon. George Rudall, (1781-1871), founder of Rudall and Rose in 1821. An arrangement of Paganiniā€™s Witches Dance (his op. 8) was already published in volume one of the Flutonicon (1834).

BIOGRAPHY:
Sydney Stevens began writing melodies on the piano before she could reach the pedals. Her earliest memory was watching her mother play classical piano. Sydney's father is a jazz pianist, so both jazz and classical influences came at an early age. Her strong sense of artistry has evolved from years of composing music that expresses a wide range of emotions. Sydney is a master at creating musical landscapes which evoke strong imagery.
A natural composer, Stevens finished her music composition degree after years of honing her artistry in the absence of outside influences. After completing her formal training in music composition, Sydney graduated cum laude from University of Redlands in California, receiving the prestigious Sigma Alpha Iota Composer's Award. Stevens also studied music composition at University of York, England and with composer and recording artist Bill Douglas in Boulder, Colorado.
In addition to her large body of piano works and vocal songs, Sydney has composed music for chamber and symphony orchestra. Born in Los Angeles, California and raised in Seattle, Washington, Stevens currently resides in the beautiful Columbia River Gorge. A prolific composer, Stevens also teaches private piano lessons to students of all ages.
