Dwight viewed the song’s message as a metaphor for the fight against slavery, which contributed to its popularity in the United States. He wrote the piece for Caroline Alice Roberts, with whom Elgar was romantically involved, and presented the piece to Miss Roberts as an engagement present in 1888. My arrangement is for flute and guitar, however the melody instrument could easily be a violin. This is arranged in the key of E major, and the guitar part is pitched in D major, but the guitarist must use a capo at the second fret to bring that part up to E. My wife and i have performed this arrangement in a number of recitals and it works quite well. This beautiful version is arranged as a duet for one Violin and one Cello.The Londonderry Air was first collected and notated in the mid-nineteenth century in County Londonderry in the North of Ireland, however, the origins of the melody remain unknown. In 1913 the English writer Frederic Weatherley set his poem Danny Boy to the melody. There are many other settings of the Londonderry Air, with various lyrics and in musical styles from orchestral to brass band to jazz, but Danny Boy remains the best known.Londonderry Air is simply arranged in accessible keys and over a range best suited to the instruments. The melody is played twice with a key change and different accompaniment on the second verse and is suitable for players at an intermediate level and above.
