English composer Edward Elgar wrote the orchestral workâ?? Variations on an Original Themeâ??, popularly known as the Enigma Variations, between 1898 and 1899. The work is dedicated to my friends pictured within, each variation being a musical representation of one of his close acquaintances. The name of the ninth variation Nimrod refers to Augustus Jaeger, Elgarâ??s music editor.
