Piano Solo - Level 2 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.553105

Composed by Erik Satie. Arranged by Scott Camp. 20th Century,Concert,Contemporary,Standards,Wedding. Score. 3 pages. Scott Camp #4625347. Published by Scott Camp (A0.553105).

Beautiful.
Iconic.
Enigmatic.

I suppose this piece by Erik Satie has always touched the heartstrings of listeners. The harmonic language anticipates many sonorities that have become essential to later popular and jazz piano.

Is this an example of a one hit wonder?  It is undeniably famous, as evidenced by its continued use as background music for television ads of high end luxury goods.

I often wonder what Satie eventually thought of this piece. This Gymnopedie is obviously his best known work, so I wonder if it also stands out as having generated the most revenue for Satie. If so, why didn't he replicate its success? Did he understand what he himself had created?

So many questions... I guess I'll have to ask Alexa.

Composed by Adrian Gagiu. Classical,Contemporary. Individual part. 28 pages. Adrian Gagiu #695427. Published by Adrian Gagiu (A0.1091262).

Piano sonata in Neoclassical style, developing the themes briefly tried out by Beethoven in the slow introduction to the Finale of his Sonata No. 29 op. 106 (1818). This first movement (Allegro moderato) utilizes the first two of those melodic and textural scraps as the two themes of a sonata form in a mostly delicate, fantasia-like manner, with time signature ambiguity and alternance. The second movement (Allegro) utilizes the next two of those melodic and textural scraps as the two themes of an agitated 'scherzo' in G sharp minor, with allusions to Bach's Prelude in C minor from the second book of 'The Well-Tempered Clavier' and to Beethoven's Bagatelle in G minor, op. 126 no. 2. The Finale (Largo - Allegro ma non troppo) utilizes first the searching sections of that Introduction, as an enigmatic preparation of the big surprise in the Finale proper: a set of nine, mostly powerful variations on a tone row, yet treated not entirely with the twelve-tone technique, but in extended tonality context. Variations 2-5 allude to motifs from the themes of the previous movements. The mp3 is a self-made recording of the first movement using a Graf 1826 fortepiano sampled by Modartt's Pianoteq. Performing Rights Organization: SOCAN. Total duration: 19 min.

By Brad Rau. By Erik Satie. Arranged by Brad Rau. 20th Century. Individual part. 3 pages. Brad Rau #838582. Published by Brad Rau (A0.1243618).

D'une Manière Très Particulière was originally written for solo piano and has been arranged for solo guitar by Brad Rau.  Fingering suggestions have been added to make it easier to play.  The original piece was notated without measures; however, measures have been added to make learning easier.  The pieces also do not have a key signature. However, it seems to begin in C minor.  It has been transposed to A minor to make it easier to play.

This is from a set of pieces Erik Satie wrote in 1897 called Pieces Froides or Cold Pieces.  The first set of pieces is called Airs à faire fuir or Tunes to Make You Run Away.  This movement is called D'une manière très particulière or In a Very Unusual Manner.  In these sets of pieces, Satie writes in the enigmatic he used to compose the Gymnopedies and Gnossienne composed earlier.

This little-known piece is rarely played on guitar but works really well.

The Waking, by Theodore Roethke, is an enigmatic villanelle written in 1953, a year after he got married. In it the poet puts forward various ideas about life and how to live it. A villanelle is based on repeated lines (a refrain) that connects each stanza as the poem progresses.

Theodore Roethke's poetry is known for its exploration of the self through reflection on family and nature; there is plenty of depth and technical skill. His mental illness also caused him to look into the darkness from time to time, recording his inner life in personal poems.

Growing up, he spent lots of time in his father's garden and greenhouses and soil and plants and roots and things often turn up in his work. In fact the greenhouse, for Roethke, was a symbol 'for the whole of life, a womb, a heaven-on-earth.'

The Waking doesn't contain a greenhouse but it does have symbolism and takes the reader into unexpected places. It is both introspective and positive in its outlook.

SKU: A0.533354

Composed by Ali Ben Sou Alle, Gioachino Rossini. Arranged by Paul Wehage. Concert,Opera,Romantic Period,Standards. Score and part. 30 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #2363209. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533354).

One of the most enigmatic figures in the history of the Saxophone, Ali Ben Sou Alle (Charles-Valentin Soualle) was born in
1820 in Arras, France. After receiving his first prize in Clarinet at the Paris Conservatory in 1844. he served as the director of
music of The French Marine Band in Senegal, and then was named first clarinet solo at the Opéra-Comique in Paris. However, after the Revolution of 1848, Soualle was forced to flee France to England where he settled in London, playing in the Orchestra of the Queen's Theatre. His songs and piano pieces were published in London.

While in London, Soualle met another exiled French musician, Louis Antoine Jullien, who conducted a light music series in
London. Jullien encouraged Soualle to take up the saxophone, and after modifying the instrument by adding a single octave
mechanism (the modern system used today) and keys for the lower register, Soualle became known as a virtuoso and began
touring performing solo recitals (or mono-concerts, as they were called at the time) calling his modified saxophone the
«turcophone ». He performed in all the European capitals and then traveled to Australia, New Zealand, Manilla, Java, through
China and then to India where he finally settled in Mysore, becoming the director of the Royal Music for the Maharadjah. It was
during this period that he converted to Islam and changed his nmae to Ali ben Sou Alle (or Ali, son of Soualle). He
subsequently travaled to Ile Maurice, to French Polynesia, the Cap of Natal and the Cap of Good Hope. All of these voyages
were subjects of musical works which Soualle entitled Souvenirs de... and may perhaps have been part of a collection known
as The Royal Album which was presented to the Prince of Wales after a royal concert. Soualle returned to Mysore in 1858 and was almost killed in the Indian Revolution.

Around 1860, Soualle returned to France for health reasons and began publishing his own music. On March 27 1865, he
performed a command performance for the Emperor Napoleon III at the Tuileries Palace in the presence of the entire Imperial
Family. After 1865, nothing more is known about him.

Fantaisie sur Le Barbier de Séville begins with the Count's 1st act cavatina Ecco ridente in cielà This is followed by a series
of variations sur Rosina's Cabaletta Io sono docile. The second act finale Fredda ed immobile is then presented in a number of variations. Finally, the second part of the Count and Figaros first act duo (Ah che d'amore) brings the work to a brilliant finish.

Large Ensemble Cello,Double Bass,Flute,Multi-Percussion,Oboe,Trombone,Viola - Level 5 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.533689

Composed by Carson Cooman. Concert,Contemporary,Standards. Score and parts. 64 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3038607. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533689).

Concerto for Bass Trombone and Six Players (2006) was commissioned by the Carnegie
Mellon School of Music for the Carnegie Mellon Contemporary Ensemble, Walter Morales,
director. The work is dedicated to trombonist Jim Siders, for whom the solo part was written.
The work is scored for solo bass trombone with an ensemble of primarily “dark†instruments
– alto flute, clarinet, viola, cello, contrabass, and percussion. The solo bass trombone is the
focal point of the musical discourse, acting throughout largely as a protagonist – with much
material best described as bitterly lyrical. The work maintains a generally dark, obsessive,
and bitter tone throughout.
Unlike some concerti, however, the work is not about an aggression between soloist and the
rest of the ensemble. Rather the bass trombone is “first†among a collection of like minded
individuals – all expressing the same sentiments and aggressions.
The opening section is marked “spasmodic.†Quiet nervous twitches serve as a backdrop to a
melodic unfolding of the basic material and interval content. The end of this part “breaks
apart†to reveal a section marked “slow, otherworldly.†The harmonic material starts modal,
open, and “distant†in feeling (perhaps a recollection of a distant past) before becoming
gradually gnarled again.
The trombone leads towards the next section: an ever-building athletic “moto perpetuo.†This
reaches its peak in an aggressive and horribly angry climax – with a wide-ranging trombone
part marked “wildly raving; insane, uglyâ€, obliterated by bass drum hits and shrieking
hammer blows from the other instruments.
A nervous and timid interlude returns to the nervous twitching of the opening – though
everything is slightly slower and more hushed than before, finally breaking off into an
enigmatic coda.
