The arrangement begins with a unison statement of the head from the trumpet section with the sax section taking it up later in the arrangement. Rhythm section parts are fully notated to assist younger players. There is solo space for any trumpet, trombone, and sax with changes and written solos included on every part in the appropriate section of the arrangement. Use this space to feature soloists in the group and encourage all to try their hand at improvising. ON THE BUS is an original composition for big band and featured as a set piece for the 2001 Australian Academy Festival of Music Jiants of Jazz Ensemble division. This is one of the first pieces I composed and arranged for big band and is based on the chord changes of Charlie Parker's Yardbird Suite.  I composed the tune in the late 1980's when, as a student, I was listening to a lot of Bird and Miles and spending a lot of time catching buses!   The original arrangement was done for the Queensland Youth Big Band and has been somewhat revised for this version.  The head features an Alto Sax 1/Trumpet 2 soli supported with some rhythmic and melodic stabs from the ensemble.  Space is provided in the chart for solos from Alto Sax1, Trumpet 2 and Piano.  The chorus beginning at measure 75 features a brass section unison soli passage, composed of some of my favourite Bird and Miles licks.  This provides a challenge for the brass players to keep this section tight and swinging.  Fully notated rhythm section parts have been included to assist less experienced players.  I hope you enjoy performing this chart!
