It became a standard song among jazz musicians, especially after Miles Davis recorded it. There is a wonderful version recorded by saxophonist  Cannonball Adderly on his 1955 album “Cannonball Adderly With Strings”. PERFORMANCE NOTESSurrey With the Fringe on Top is a 32-bar AABA form in the key of concert B flat. In this arrangement, the A-section melody features several tongue-in-cheek grand pause moments. These are indicated by fermatas over quarter note rests. Have fun with these spots, varying the length of time you pause, which can done with a comical effect. The solo section at bar 37 is open to any player, and a set of notes is provided for improvisation. The backgrounds at 41 are to be played each time, and the solo section can be repeated as necessary for additional solos. The shout chorus at bar 47 should be played at full volume. Be sure to investigate and balance the chords among the wind instruments.  The shout chorus winds down with a call and response between the brass and saxes.I hope you have fun with this classic tune!

I arranged this for my 7th grade jazz combo (a few somewhat advanced students that were interested in learning jazz).  I initially arranged it for 1 trumpet, 1 sax, 1 tenor, and piano but it is a flexible arrangement with the melody doubled in the trumpet and sax and the tenor and optional trombone part have harmony.  You could use the optional trombone in addition to the tenor or instead of tenor.  If you use a bass or bari sax, tell your piano player to cut the bass clef and just comp on the chords.  This arrangement would also work nicely as a saxophone choir, with or without piano accompaniment.  You could even use this as a solo for one trumpet or one sax and piano. You can easily add a drummer and just have them play a simple swing beat.

It is named after the edelweiss, a white flower found high in the Alps. The song was created for the 1959 Broadway production of The Sound of Music, as a song for the character Captain Georg von Trapp (originated by the performer Theodore Bikel). In the musical, Captain von Trapp and his family sing this song during the concert near the end of Act II, as a statement of Austrian patriotism in the face of the pressure put upon him to join the navy of Nazi Germany following the Anschluss (Nazi annexation of their homeland). It is also Captain von Trapp's subliminal goodbye to his beloved homeland, using the flower as a symbol of his loyalty to Austria. In the 1965 film adaptation, the song is also sung by the Captain earlier in the film when he rediscovers music with his children. It was the last song ever written by Oscar Hammerstein II, prior to his death in August, 1960.
