I served as Conductor of the local LGBT (at that time no ‘Q’) mixed chorus during the 20th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. To celebrate Sarria’s intention of unification I arranged an SATB inclusive version (with piano accompaniment) of his anthem. I have updated the lyrics to include our many embraced diversities. Ciribiribin, an Italian waltz style ballad. was composed by Alberto Pestalozza in 1898, with lyrics by Carlin Tiochet, and has been popular in Europe and North America ever since. The lyrics were originally written in the Piedmontese dialect of northwest Italy.  It has been recorded by such notables as Enrico Caruso, Mario Lanza, Grace Moore, Katherine Grayson, as well as the orchestras of Benny Goodman, Harry James, Glenn Miller. Ciribiribin has also been featured in many movies and television shows between (from at least) 1929 to the present day. This arrangement is scored as a duet for soprano & baritone with piano accompaniment. Original traditional Italian text is used and and English text also appears on this arrangement.  Performance time: 3:15.  This song is popular with outdoor ethnic festivals.

Beer Barrel Polka (Roll Out the Barrel). composed by Czech musician Jaromir Vejvoda (1927), evolved to become famous ‘round the world, especially because of its many transformations in pre-World War II Europe.  In America, it became popular for its English lyrics about a garden party that livens up when the beer begins to flow.  This song, incidentally, has been ‘unofficially adopted’ by Wisconsin as a ‘state song’ and is often played for Wisconsin sporting events, not to mention beer halls and gardens everywhere.  This arrangement is for a 4-part SATB ensemble with piano accompaniment.  Performance time: 2:05+  Its novelty makes this a perfect ‘ask the audience to join in’ number.

Stewart (A0.1260597). “O Sleep, Why Dost Thou Leave Me?�, from Georg Friedrich Händel’s oratorio/opera Semele (1743), is sung by the lovely, yet vain and ambitious princess, Semele of Thebes.  She awakens and regrets that the dream she was having has ended, and calls upon Sleep to return and restore her peaceful vision. (This aria is often suggested listening to those suffering from insomnia.)  This arrangement is for 4-part SATB ensemble to be performed a cappella.  It’s purpose is twofold: to serve as an introduction to Händel and English Baroque music, while at the same time teaching young sopranos a performable aria for their solo repertoire. The song has become covered by later artists, most notably Amii Stewart in 1979. Stewart's disco version was the most successful on weekly music charts.Eddie Floyd's recording peaked at number 28 on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent one week at number 1 on the Soul Singles chart. The song was written in the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee (now The National Civil Rights Museum). Steve Cropper has stated in interviews that there was a lightning storm the night that he and Eddie wrote the song, hence the lyrics 'It's like thunder, lightning, The way you love me is frightening'. Floyd's version earned a Gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) on July 17, 1995 weekly music charts. Performance time:  approx. 3 minutes.

At the time, the Beatles were beginning to find the stress of business meetings tiresome, and George Harrison found time away and composed this song in Eric Clapton's garden. He's clearly longing for the weather and the mood of the band to lift. It has unusual time signature changes and harmonies, and it's instantly recognisable and uplifting. In this arrangement the 2 upper voices mostly move a sixth apart and the lower voices just add foundational notes. As well as the full score, there's a vocal score which will be easier for the singers to find their way - watch out for the repeats. The syncopated rhythms need to be precise but also relaxed.

To today’s ear the lyrics speak about the power of music to brighten one’s day. The original lyrics however contain text that is considered derogatory and worthy of a study of the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920’s to better understand popular American music and racial stereotypes of the early 20th century.  This arrangement is scored for a 4-part SATB ensemble with piano accompaniment. Performance time: 3:20. An apt signature tune for choirs.
