It is considered the first popular song to be based on a riff (a repetitive short rhythmic phrase) and is now a jazz standard.This timeless blues song has since been performed by bands led by Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Tommy Dorsey, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, and Al Hirt; blues artists Mamie Smith, Ethel Waters, and Ella Fitzgerald; legendary performers Bix Beiderbecke, Sidney Bechet, Pete Fountain, Django Reinhardt, Art Tatum; and more recently by Chet Atkins, Herb Ellis, Branford Marsalis, and the Canadian Brass. This woodwind quintet arrangement is based on the upbeat recording by pianist Cliff Jackson, giving it an unmistakable 1940s stride feel with relentless rhythm and colorful harmonies. In 1931, Alberta Nichols wrote the music and Mann Holiner wrote the words for a song titled Till the Real Thing Comes Along which was featured in a Broadway revue titled Rhapsody in Black. The review, produced by Lew Leslie, was similar to the famous Blackbirds reviews of the late 1920s and 1930s, and featured Ethel Waters, who introduced Till the Real Thing Comes Along. This version features a root-based chord blocking that John and I have used in a number of our arrangements and was developed from the 1936 sheet music. We also added some pretty cool left-hand fills to keep things moving along smoothly. We hope you like what we've done with this grand old tune!

Ethel Waters first sang it at The Cotton Club night club in Harlem in 1933 and recorded it that year, and in the same year it was sung in London by Elisabeth Welch and recorded by Frances Langford. Also in 1933, for the first time the entire floor revue from Harlem's Cotton Club went on tour, playing theatres in principal cities. The revue was originally called The Cotton Club Parade of 1933 but for the road tour it was changed to Stormy Weather Revue; it contained the song Stormy Weather, which was sung by Adelaide Hall. This version was developed from the original 1933 sheet music and features a root-based chord blocking that John and I have used in a number of our arrangements - we hope you like what we've done with this grand old tune!

The lyrics show a number of crossings out and corrections.
