Composed by Mary Ann Joyce. Celtic,Concert. 8 pages. Mary Ann Joyce-Walter #6207001. Published by Mary Ann Joyce-Walter (A0.989229).

A familiar 19th century Irish ballad by the Irish poet, Eugene Field.  The poem and the music are touching and sad:  there are toys in the attic covered with dust, and the little toy soldier is red with rust, and his musket molds in his hands.  There was a time when the toys were new and Little Boy Blue kissed them and put them there.  He told them not to leave until he came to get them, but - an angel song awakened Little Boy Blue, and the years past.  The faithful toys stayed in the place where he put them, but they wondered sorrowfully what happened to their Little Boy Blue..

Composed by Elissa Brill. Contemporary. Score and parts. 27 pages. Elissa Brill Pashkin #482405. Published by Elissa Brill Pashkin (A0.938916).

Airborne, composed in 1999, was originally inspired by the illustration The Dinky-Bird by Maxfield Parrish, a print of which hung on the wall of my childhood home. The drawing was one of several included in Parrish’s illustrations from the 1904 Scribner and Sons Poems of Childhood, and was itself based on the Eugene Field poem The Dinkey-Bird. The piece is a deliberate attempt to write in a lighter, freer, more audience-accessible style, while capturing both the motion and the child-like wonder of the image. It is also an exploration of timbre, using a combination of instruments (flute, clarinet, marimba) I had not used together before. The piece is approximately 7 1/2 minutes long. Parts are included for the flute and clarinet. The marimba plays from score. The performers in the sound clip are Sue Kurian, flute; Robert D'Ambrosio, clarinet; and Cheryl Wiener, marimba. SKU: A0.755010

Composed by Sy Brandon. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score and parts. 42 pages. Sy Brandon #3239673. Published by Sy Brandon (A0.755010).

In The Land of Wonder-Wander attempts to capture the essence of both Maxfield Parrish’s illustration and Eugene Fields’ poem The Dinkey-Bird. Both the painting and the poem create the feeling of a magical place where beauty, joy and pleasure abound. It is a mysterious place, perhaps as occurring in a dream, yet a place where one does not wish to leave. In The Land of Wonder-Wander begins quietly with vague tonality and sparse instrumentation as it transports the listener into this mystical land. As the tempo becomes stricter and the instrumentation fuller, the beauty of this place is apparent. A change to a triple meter and a faster tempo creates a joyous and wondrous section as there are many sweet treats growing to satisfy the soul. Children scampering and playing are represented by an allegro section with playful melodies and slight dissonance. The Dinkey Bird becomes the focus of the next section, which uses a staccato motif surrounded by rapid scales and arpeggios. These ideas build in intensity, expressing the wonder and beauty of this far away land, until they begin to fade away as the land recedes into the sea. A last flourish occurs as if one is trying to hold on to the experience before one wakes up from this marvelous dream. This work is recorded by Laura Koepele-Tenges, Christie Vohs, Megan Lauterbach, and John Elmquist on the Emeritus label.

Composed by David Conte. Christmas, Epiphany, Christmas-Sacred. Octavo. 16 pages. E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital #9254-E. Published by E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital (MQ.9254-E).

English.

A creative combination of two texts appropriate for Christmas or Epiphany. Eugene Field was an American writer best known for his children's poetry. His poem Star of the East describes the events from the gospel of Matthew in which wise men from the East came to Jerusalem. The composer skillfully includes PUER NOBIS by Michael Praetorius. Children's choir or an ensemble of treble voices join the chorus to bring the piece to a close. A beautiful trumpet descant is included, often reinforcing the PUER NOBIS tune.
