They tend to be short and not too demanding technically. Ralph Sauer has arranged Wagner's two Leaves for Euphonum and Piano in bass clef. Number 1 is a piano work from 1875 dedicated to Frau Betty Schott the wife of music publisher Franz Schott. Number 2, also a piano work, is an early opus from 1840 and is dedicated to the Paris based German painter Ernst Benedikt Kietz, a big fan of Wagner, who helped support the young composer during his lean years in Paris. Both leaves are lyrical, giving the performer a true taste of the master.

Gounod's Three Romances Without Words arranged by Ralph Sauer are taken from a group of five similarly named Romances Without Words originally composed for Piano solo between 1861 and 1866. Four of them were later arranged for Violin and Piano. The three movements are titled: 1. The Periwinkle (La Pervenche) 2. The Brook (Le Ruisseau) 3. The Evening (Le Soir) The three movements (all in bass clef) are very lyrical, about 8 minutes in length, and are perfect for intermediate and higher level performers to begin to learn the finer points of phrasing. An original 21st Century piece which fuses influences from nearly every genre and period.  The Nocturne showcases the performer's tone quality, particularly in the upper register. The melody has hints of Contemporary Classical, Post-Romantic, and New Age, but overall is Minimalist. The Piano Accompaniment in this section is entirely a 2 chord ostinato in the Right Hand only.  The Rondo has continuity from the Nocturne in that the Piano Accompaniment continues with Right Hand only chords. This section is heavily rhythmic with West Indian/Caribbean rhythms and some pulsing Rock influence, yet still with characteristics of Contemporary Classical.  This Nocturne and Rondo makes a great Audition piece to show your musicianship. Flight of the Bumblebee is an orchestral interlude written by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov for his opera The Tale of Tsar Saltan, composed in 1899–1900. Its composition is intended to musically evoke the seemingly chaotic and rapidly changing flying pattern of a bumblebee. Despite the piece's being a rather incidental part of the opera, it is today one of the more familiar classical works because of its frequent use in popular culture. The piece closes Act III, Tableau 1, during which the magic Swan-Bird changes Prince Gvidon Saltanovich (the Tsar's son) into an insect so that he can fly away to visit his father (who does not know that he is alive). The duration of this is 2.07 minutes and it is a difficult level piece.

Claude Debussy’s two sets of Préludes for piano have always been among my favorites and I have selected these three from Livre 1 because they work well on low instruments. If you are unfamiliar with the Préludes, I suggest you listen to some recordings first to get an idea of what these pieces are all about. You can then perhaps introduce your own ideas. Debussy specified the very slow tempo for Footprints…, but the other tempos are just my suggestions. Likewise, the translations of the less familiar French terms are mine, and you may wish to rethink them. These pieces will really test your quartet’s ability to play together.The score is in bass clef, but alternative treble clef parts are included.
