Just a Closer Walk With Thee is a beautiful spiritual arranged here for Solo Euphonium and Piano.Little is known of the origins of Just a Closer Walk With Thee, other than it was sung in African-American churches in the nineteenth century. National religious conventions in the 1930s gave the hymn a wider audience. Many versions were recorded in the 1940s and Just a Closer Walk With Thee was quickly adopted as a standard by the New Orleans Jazz revival.

The songs of Des Knaben Wunderhorn (The Youth's Magic Horn) by Gustav Mahler are set for voice and piano and voice and orchestra taken from German folk poems assembled and published by editors Arnim and Brentano around 1805-08. The Vier Lieder, beautifully edited for Euphonium and Piano by Ralph Sauer are taken from Mahler's fourth set of these poems published in 1899. The four songs are: I. Wer hat dies Liedlein erdacht? (Who has created this song?) II. Lob des hohen Verstandes (In praise of lofty intellect) III. Verlor’ne Müh’ (Labor lost) IV. Lied des Verfolgten im Turm (Song of the persecuted in the tower) Mr. Sauer also includes German lyrics with English translations. Altogether the songs are about 12 minutes in length. The range is suitable for moderately advanced performers.

The double bass is used well, as both soloist, accompanist and equal partner, and the contrast of arco and pizzicato create new and interesting textures. The contrasting musical ideas are effective, and the use of solos, question and answer, and unified rhythms help to maintain interest for players and audiences alike. The cello and double bass duo is a popular ensemble with bassists and this piece would fit easily into any recital and for any audience. The changing tonalities keep the piece alive and alert. Conversation in Orange & Brown doesn't outstay its welcome and would be accessible to many musicians.
