Death is a common topic in his writings. Yet despite the somber imagery, there is often a strength and resilience. The journey of death is described, but not taken. Death is the adversary, not the ruler. The Hand that Signed the Paper speaks of the often cruel and deadly power of a signed document- a document of taxation, of treaty or of counting casualties. The five fingers mark the dead, but do not soothe. “Hands have no tears to flow.� And Death Shall Have No Dominion expresses the triumph of the human spirit over death. “Though lovers be lost love shall not.� Do Not Go Gentle into that Good Night represents the fight against death. “Rage, rage against the dying of the light.� The musical expression of these poems places the voice in the low (dark) range. Tempi are slow, and minor keys are prevalent. Only occasionally are major tonalities presented. These passages combine with particularly uplifting phrases such as “Though they sink through the sea, they shall rise again� and “Wild men, who caught and sang the sun in flight…� Near the end of the last song, the poet addresses his deceased father: “And you, my father, there on the sad height...� The voice stays on a constant pitch while the harmony lifts beneath (to the heights), in the Lydian (raised) mode. Russell Brown may have been influenced by the older She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, first copyrighted in 1917 by George Norton. Or maybe the 1949 John Wayne movie by the same title. The impact of Tony Orlando's cover of Tie A Yellow Ribbon pushed the symbolism into the public eye after its release in 1973, especially in light of Vietnam and the Iran Hostage Crisis. Today it represents various support groups in different countries; from AIDS to Cancer, to Suicide Prevention, and supporting troops, with a major resurgence in use during the War in Afghanistan as a result of 9/11. Housman‘s poems by George Butterworth, reorchestrated for Chamber Wind Ensemble, was commissioned by the Maidstone Wind Symphony for their recent Concert of Remembrance entitled A Time For Peace.Composed in 1911 for baritone voice and piano, this collection of short pieces utilises poems from A.E. Housman’s A Shropshire Lad published in 1896. The words have been woven into a delicate and moving composition, with the emotions contained in the text expertly drawn out through use of dynamics and phrasing.The delicate nature of the original pieces has been kept, with the voices of the wind orchestra giving a new timbral twist to the music. The reality of growing up in wartime is prevalent in the theme of the music and is captured well by Butterworth’s original. There has been a few orchestral settings of these songs, but this arrangement is to be the first for wind band.Premiered by Martin Hindmarsh and a selection of the Maidstone Wind Symphony players, the performance was delicate and true to the original essence of the piano accompaniment.
