Abendlied (Evening Song) is from a cycle of 12 piano duets, Op. 85, written in 1849, a particularly prolific year of composition for Schumann. The great Hungarian violinist Joseph Joachim took the final number, consisting merely of a completely unpianistic one-handed melody with chordal accompaniment for two hands, and arranged it for violin, oboe or flute. The present arrangement expands that list of instruments to include the Soprano Saxophone, in its infancy at the time the piece was composed. An alternate part for Alto Saxophone is also included. The soaring, free melody is reminiscent of Schumann’s Manfred music, written around the same time. This piece is very demanding in terms of breath control and phrasing. Your students and audience will both have lots of fun, and this is really effective in recruitment concerts as well. The piece starts with some percussive stomps and slaps that sound great on stage and are instantly recognizable. The 6/8 meter may be a challenge if your students haven't played in that rhythmic space before, but the familiarity of the song will help. The song is squarely in D harmonic minor, and as such gives a good opportunity to practice F natural, B flat, and low C# fingerings. This piece is a blast and I know your students will enjoy playing it.

I've arranged it in a sort of Stride Piano style and the introduction owes a lot to Fats Waller and his famous waterfall technique. I don't include dynamics or fingering as no two piano teachers would agree on such things I prefer to leave these to the individual player. This is a really fun piece to play and is a tune of great nostalgic value for me. Also note this is a piano solo and doesn't include notation for the other instruments in my YouTube video but was written as a piano solo and sounds great as such.Hope you get as much fun out of playing it as I have.
