It was written in 1892 when he was only 19, and became such a success that he could never leave a concert platform without being expected to play it as an encore. It was dedicated to Rachmaninoff's harmony teacher at the Moscow Conservatoire, Arensky, and forms one of the set of five pieces entitled 'Morceaux de fantasie'. Here it has been rearranged so that all the notes can be played by those with small hands.

The melody takes the form of A B A1.  The guitar part is composed in a style reminiscent of a folk singer’s finger style picking offset by a bridge section similar to renaissance period block chords.  Although the tempo never changes, the difference in styles gives the piece a feeling of tempo change – fast and light; slow, stately, and expansive.  The chords are simple.  There is an opportunity for the guitar player to work with five finger right hand technique if he/she so chooses. He was born the son of a surveyor and forester, in �azy, near Siedlce, Poland. He studied at the Warsaw Institute of Music under Stanisław Moniuszko and Władysław Żeleński, then at the Moscow Conservatory from 1880, studying with Aleksander Michałowski, Pavel (Paul) Pabst, Nikolai Rubinstein, and Anton Arensky. From 1886 to 1917 he was professor of piano at the conservatory. He never returned to his native country.
