With a middle section in waltz rhythm, and an extended coda, it is suitable for any Christmas concert or church service. The setting comes from my two volume clarinet collection, Carols For The King From Around The World, (available at Sheet Music Press) which I am gradually rearranging for different performers. There is already a version for solo flute and other instrumentation will be offered eventually. The melody is also associated with the Easter carol, Now The Green Blade Riseth. It is from a set of international carols commissioned by clarinetist Lydia Calhoun for her CD, Carols for the King from Around the World, released in 2015. For more advanced performers, this perennial favorite is suitable for Christmas concerts and church preludes or offertories; it can be taken at either a moderate or a slower tempo, and is around 5 minutes in length. The clarinet solo version may be found in volume two of my two volume collection of carols for clarinet and piano, also titled Carols For The King From Around The World. The string parts are of moderate difficulty and may be purchased separately. See also the full score for cello, string quartet and piano, and for cello solo and piano. Easily learned by a children's choir, the setting was originally written for a musical drama on the life of William Wilberforce, who led the campaign to abolish the slave trade in the British Empire in 1807.  This is perfect for Black History Month or any time a Spiritual is appropriate. In addition to the full score, the treble chorus is appended on one page, as is the cello part. The melody is familiar in its setting by Vaughan Williams as Five Variants on Dives and Lazarus. Of moderate difficulty, this would make a lovely prelude or offertory piece, and could also be used in concert settings. Two copies are required for performance. This is a setting of two old hymn tunes, Retreat and Rockingham, originally arranged as a choral anthem with violin obbligato but here rearranged as a cello solo with piano. Also available as a violin solo, it is suitable as prelude or offertory music. The first tune, Retreat, is most commonly found in American hymnbooks for the hymn From Every Stormy Wind that Blows, hence the title, but in the United Kingdom mostly Communion hymns are sung to these melodies. Rockingham is often used as the tune for When I Survey the Wondrous Cross. If the title is to be printed in a church bulletin I recommend using whichever hymn is most familiar in the context as the title! A MIDI recording is provided.
