This is a setting of two old hymn tunes, Retreat and Rockingham, originally arranged as a choral anthem with violin obbligato but here rearranged as a cello solo with piano. Also available as a violin solo, it is suitable as prelude or offertory music. The first tune, Retreat, is most commonly found in American hymnbooks for the hymn From Every Stormy Wind that Blows, hence the title, but in the United Kingdom mostly Communion hymns are sung to these melodies. Rockingham is often used as the tune for When I Survey the Wondrous Cross. If the title is to be printed in a church bulletin I recommend using whichever hymn is most familiar in the context as the title! A MIDI recording is provided. This lovely traditional Scottish Gaelic carol melody is perhaps better known outside Scotland as the tune used for the song Morning Has Broken, popularized by Cat Stevens. In authentic Celtic style, this would be a lovely prelude, offertory or Christmas concert piece. Originally part of the clarinet collection, Carols For The King From Around The World, (also at SMP Press) it is now available for the first time for solo violin and piano. The recording begins at the end of the introduction, in measure 8 - it was done at a youth camp as Chapel Prelude so there is some background noise. This is a medley of two old English carols, The Holly and The Ivy and I Saw Three Ships Come Sailing In, in a jazz style arrangement. It was originally part of the two volume clarinet collection, Carols For The King From Around The World, also available at Sheet Music Press. A violin collection is planned so check back for more single arrangements and eventually a two volume collection. For advanced intermediate performers, this is sheer fun from start to finish, and very suitable for Christmas concerts. The piano left hand plays a walking bass throughout and could be performed with a double bass player - contact me for the extracted part. The charming French carol is given lively treatment in this version for solo violin and piano, suitable for advanced intermediate performers. With a middle section in waltz rhythm, and an extended coda, it is suitable for any Christmas concert or church service. The setting comes from my two volume clarinet collection, Carols For The King From Around The World, (available at Sheet Music Press) which I am gradually rearranging for different performers. There is already a version for solo flute and other instrumentation will be offered eventually. The melody is also associated with the Easter carol, Now The Green Blade Riseth.
