Composed by Yury Markin. Arranged by Yury Chugunov and Zellev. 20th Century,Contemporary,Film/TV,Jazz,Wedding. Score. 4 pages. Zellev Music #797617. Published by Zellev Music (A0.1198473).

Key Signature: Bâ™ Maj
Time Signature: 3/4
Tempo: Adagio Rubato (Slowly as the performer feels like)
Difficulty: Intermediate

not much known about the composer, the piece originally comes from jazz compilation by Yury Chugunov.

from the excerpt: The publication is dedicated to the waltz - not quite an ordinary genre in jazz, where the quadruple meter reigned supreme. The waltz was established in many respects thanks to the creativity in the fifty of the musicians kula (the so-called cool jazz - cool jazz). Interest in the waltz was shown by several major musicians of this direction, such as Miles Davis, Bill Evans, Dave Brubeck. One of the first waltz themes to penetrate jazz was Frank Churchill's most popular melody from the movie Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Soon waltzes written by jazz musicians began to appear.
The jazz waltz represents the lyrical side of jazz along with the jazz ballad and bossa nova. The collection includes works by Soviet and foreign authors. The latter are represented by the names of R. Rogers, B. Evans, D. Brubeck, P. Desmond with his famous Take Five waltz and others. Dave Brubeck (in whose ensemble alto saxophonist Paul Desmond played) was perhaps the first to experiment with five-, six-, seven-quarter time signatures, widely using variable time signatures, polyrhythm; a typical example of a waltz of variable size belongs to the young Moscow pianist Daniil Kramer (Caprice). Recall, by the way, that an example of a five-quarter waltz in symphonic music is found in Tchaikovsky (second movement of the Sixth Symphony).
We hope that the collection will be of interest not only to jazz musicians, but also to a wider circle of music lovers.
-Yuri Chugunov.

Composed by Edvard Grieg. Arranged by James Guthrie, ASCAP. Concert,Halloween,Instructional,Romantic Period,Standards. Score and part. 61 pages. Jmsgu3 #5306355. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.551510).

1. Morning Mood, 2. Ase's Death, 3. Anitra's Dance, 4. In the Hall of the Mountain King

Grieg Background

In the first place, Edvard Grieg (1843 –1907) was a Norwegian composer as well as a concert pianist. As a matter of fact, most music historians consider him one of the foremost Romantic era composers. Consequently, his music is part of the international standard classical repertoire. Grieg moreover used Norwegian folk music in his own compositions.  Consequently, he ushered Norwegian music to transnational consciousness. Furthermore, he forged a national musical identity for Norway. It is important to realize that he did this in a manner similar to Jean Sibelius in Finland, and BedÅ™ich Smetana in Bohemia.

Legacy

Grieg is celebrated in the city of Bergen. For example, the city has erected numerous statues depicting Grieg. Specifically, the city has named a concert hall (Grieg Hall), a music school (Grieg Academy) and a professional choir (Edvard Grieg Kor) after him. As a matter of fact, there is also a museum located at his former home in Troldhaugen.

Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 (Op. 46)

Grieg wrote incidental music for the purpose of illustrating a play by Ibsen known as Peer Gynt. The play includes, in particular, the famous selection entitled, In the Hall of the Mountain King. In this composition, Grieg indeed depicts the exploits of the scoundrel, Peer Gynt. In one famous episode, for example, Peer steals a bride at her wedding. For this reason, the people chase him, but soon Peer falls, thereupon striking his skull on a boulder. He wakens forthwith in a highland bounded by angry gnomes. Consequently, the music of In the Hall of the Mountain King represents the mad gnomes taunting Peer. Therefore, each time the theme repeats it gets louder and faster. In the end, Peer surprisingly escapes from the mountain.

Holberg Suite and Misc. Summary

It must be remembered that Grieg originally wrote his Holberg Suite for the piano. In other words, he only later arranged it for strings. Further, Grieg composed by and large many songs with lyrics by famous writers such as Heine, Goethe, Ibsen, Hans Christian Andersen, Rudyard Kipling, and others. On balance, Norwegian pianist Eva Knardahl recorded altogether Grieg’s whole piano catalog on LP in 1980. These recordings were released again on CD in 2006. In any event, Grieg himself performed and recorded the bulk of these pieces toward the end of his life.

Composed by Nathan Petitpas - Dots and Beams. Instructional. Score and parts. 129 pages. Dots and Beams #5313621. Published by Dots and Beams (A0.931838).

This book provides its user with a series of notes on a bass staff with no rhythm values and no meter. Chapters are organized by the placement of the notes relative to the staff; on the staff, above the staff, below the staff, on and above the staff, and on and below the staff. For each pitch range there is one chapter with no accidentals and one chapter with accidentals. All exercises have a space at the beginning of each staff to write in a key signature, allowing each exercise to be read in all keys and used in many ways.

The aim with this book is to allow the user to focus specifically on exercises centred around pitch without the distraction of rhythmic values or time signatures. This can begin with the practice of sight-reading but can expand to include many other learning goals.

The diatonic sets contain notes with no accidentals or key signature. These collections can be read as written, using only natural notes, or in any of the 15 key signatures from 7 flats to 7 sharps.

Chromatic collections include sharp and flat notes as well as natural ones. The later exercises in these chapters increase the difficulty by including B#, Cb, E#, and Fb.

Ledger line chapters start with the first ledger line and gradually expand away from the staff. Exercises above and below the staff extend to the space just beyond the fourth ledger line.

The random nature of the notes in these exercises is intentional; it forces the user to pay attention to each note and makes the exercises very difficult to memorize, ensuring that they will still present a challenge even after multiple readings.

It’s important when sight-reading to cycle through the exercises quickly rather than dwelling on a single exercise for a long time. This will ensure that you’re strengthening your ability to read the notes rather than just memorizing the exercises.

Some suggestions for how to use this book include:

  • Gain comfort reading the notes and finding them on your instrument in no particular rhythm or tempo. A greater challenge can be achieved by playing them at a steady tempo or by playing them in a simple rhythmic pattern. Beginner students can begin by writing in the note names.

  • Play each exercise in all 15 key signatures.

  • Advanced theory students and improvising musicians can also use these exercises to practice identifying scale degrees in various keys or playing chords built on every scale degree in the chosen key.

  • Develop comfort with chords by playing a chord built on each note in the exercise. For example: for each note in the exercise, play the major chord with that root. Increase the difficulty with different chord qualities or different chord tones, for example: for every note, play the minor 7th chord in which the given note is the 3rd.

  • Practice transposing into different keys. This is an especially useful challenge for people who play transposing instruments such as brass and woodwind instruments.

  • Chapters with wide ranges can present a great exercise for musicians who play instruments where large leaps are a challenge. People who play strings, mallet percussion, piano, woodwinds, and brass would be among those who would benefit from practising these awkward leaps and falls.

As with any of the Dots and Beams books, the uses for this particular collection are limited only by the imagination of the musician using it. I highly encourage anybody using this book to find as many uses for it as possible. My hope is that as you grow as a musician you will find ever more creative and challenging ways to use these materials so that you can return to these books for years and still find a valuable way to use them.

Audacious Binary Forms for pianist playing one or two pianos, won Australia’s most prestigious piano composition competition the Jean Bogan Prize for Piano Composition 2016.

The world premiere was performed by Michael Kieran Harvey. He is considered by many as being one of Australia’s greatest living concert pianists. Michael specializes in performing world premieres of compositions by Australian composers. He is also a prolific composer of avant-garde music.

ABSTRACT FROM THE GENERAL DIRECTIONS

Audacious Binary Forms for piano is in a fractured binary form. Two types of structures exist; lettered structures, which are experimental structures, and explore the sonorities of the piano, and numbered structures, which are more traditional structures. A structure may be a single page or more than one page. Each page in a structure is to be played sequentially. For example, with structure C, consisting of three pages, C1, C2, C3, each page is played sequentially in numerical order, C1, C2, C3.

EXPERIMENTAL STRUCTURES

The structures A, B, C, D, E, F, G, Percussion, CADENZA, and CODA are experimental.

TRADITIONAL STRUCTURES

The structures 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6, are traditional.

PREPARING THE SCORE FOR PERFORMANCE

There are four different options for a performance.

MINIMALIST OPTION

The 13 cards cut from the CUTOUT page are shuffled. Card 4 Rag (1,2) is removed.  The 12 cards are placed face down. One card is revealed representing the structure that is to be performed. A member of the audience can be invited to shuffle the cards.

STOCHASTIC OPTION

An audience member or members can be invited to shuffle all the pages of the score. The resultant random sequence of pages becomes the whole score for the performance.

PERFORMER’S OPTION

The performer prepares the structures according to his musical tastes. All of the experimental structures should be performed. The performer is free to play none, some, or all of the traditional structures. Please note that each structure remains an independent structure and is played sequentially. For example, structure C, consisting of three pages would be played C1, C2, C3 in that order.

PERFORMER/COMPOSER OPTION

Months before the concert the performer can contact me at paulcopeland1@bigpond.com, to discuss the performance, and to work out an ideal performance structure for the work, taking into consideration the venue, expected size of audience, size of auditorium, music program, and if two pianos will be available.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING SHEET MUSIC SIZE

Please note that the score should be printed on separate pages (the notated pages), not back to back. Ideally the score should be printed on A3 pages in colour. However the score can still be printed in grayscale.

The sheet music file is approximately 15Mb because the score is in full color.

Arpeggio Flo is a gentle classical piano piece for pianists at the Grade 2 standard, featuring moving broken chords in both the right and left hands.

This piano sheet music is in 6/8 time and should have a fairly slow 2-in-a-bar feel (two groups of three quavers in each bar). Have a listen to the performance track whilst looking at the sheet music and that should make sense.

It can also be useful to listen to which hand has the melody line - for example, in bar 5 the left hand takes over, so keep the right hand accompaniment at a lower volume than the left hand at this point.

You'll also spot a few slightly weird 'small notes' (for example in bar 4 and bar 9). These are called appoggiaturas and are musical ornaments that embellish the melody. The appoggiaturas are played quickly just before the note they belong to. It's probably a good idea to leave them out when you are first learning the piece - keep things simple to start with!

Also watch out for the 'poco rit' markings - where the tempo just reduces slightly, and then returns at the 'a tempo' markings. Again - it's a good plan to leave these out when you're just beginning to play this piece.

Enjoy the flow of this piece!
