Prelude 23 in G Major Lydian from 24 Preludes for the Piano in Major and Minor Modes by composer Brian Golden

The creative concept in writing these preludes is to provide a link to past preludes written for the keyboard, and in particular to the works of J.S. Bach and Frederic Chopin, whose works stand as essential repertoire for any student of the piano.  Using Bach’s and Chopin’s examples, my goal was to compose in all twenty-four keys, yet offer my own variation on the progression of key signatures – Bach’s being a pattern of major to parallel minor progressing chromatically through all keys, and Chopin’s a pattern of major to relative minor keys progressing clockwise through the circle of fifths.  In order to expand my harmonic and melodic possibilities, I have included the modal keys rather than only the major and harmonic minor keys, and have chosen to work counterclockwise through the circle of fifths, which is a more natural harmonic progression.  Therefore, all major preludes resolve from one to another V-I, as well as do all the minor preludes.
While there are seven modal scales, I decided to leave out the locrian modes for the following reasons.  First, due to the diminished fifth, the locrian mode cannot be thought of as either major nor minor.  Second, the locrian mode did not have a relative key to pair with, since there were no other keys with the identical characteristic notes.
In creating the key architecture, I determined that there was only one solution to pairing major and relative minor scales based on a shared parent key and characteristic note - ionian/aolian, mixolydian/phrygian and lydian/dorian.  This specific order of modal scales is the only order that would enable composing in all twelve key signatures.  Finally, the inspiration for each prelude came from playing through several other preludes in the same keys - mostly by Bach and Chopin - and letting their themes and styles influence me in the writing of my own.

Composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. Arranged by John M. Honeycutt. Romantic Period. Score. 10 pages. Music Innovators Workshop #4357661. Published by Music Innovators Workshop (A0.984709).

The great piece is notated on a key map tablature.

This piece is notated on a vertically oriented tablature called a key map. Key maps are intended to SHOW you (visually) which keys to play by matching (mapping) the locations of the keys on the keyboard. >>> The group of 12 keys from Middle C up to B form what we call the green Octave Group. (There are 7 of these identical groups on the piano distinguished by their colors and locations.) The key map staff is based on an octave group of the keyboard. For each key map octave group, the 5 vertical lines of the staff stand for the 5 matching black KEYS. >>> Staff lines ARE SPACED to match the horizontal spacing of the black keys on the keyboard The notes for black keys are placed ON these staff lines. The notes for the white keys are placed BETWEEN the lines. >>> The notes of a key map move to the left and right to indicate change in PITCH and down the page to indicate the passing of TIME (rhythm). The vertical length of each note is proportional to the time (in beats) that the sound requires.

If you want to know more about this beautiful key map notation, you might consider reviewing our article describing how this notation works, entitled: Getting Started With Key Maps for the Piano. It contains an explanation of how key maps work and includes a number of examples. 16 pages. It is promotionally priced at only $1.99. Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by Diamond S Music. Baroque,Concert,Instructional. Score. 3 pages. Diamond S Music #3664643. Published by Diamond S Music (A0.790135).

2-Part Invention No. 13 in A minor by J.S. BACH, BWV 784 for Solo Piano. This is the original version of the beloved 15 2-Part Inventions by Johann Sebastian Bach. The Inventions is a collection of short pieces Bach wrote for the musical education of his young pupils. These are among the finest examples of artistic gems ever written for this purpose, and probably because of this, they became very popular among Bach's pupils and others ever since they were written.

The work comprises fifteen two-part, each named 'inventio', and fifteen three-part pieces, named 'sinfonia'. These two groups of pieces are arranged in an identical fashion-in ascending order by key-so that there is little doubt that Bach's intention was to bring them together as a single work. This is also confirmed by the way they are carefully written in his autograph fair copy penned in 1723. On every facing page of an open volume each piece demonstrates the contrapuntal technique, while, at the same time, explores a wide range of musical expressions using various styles and developing the motives in a logical fashion.

Composed by Johannes Brahms. Arranged by Ray Thompson. 19th Century,Romantic Period. 17 pages. RayThompsonMusic #1063742. Published by RayThompsonMusic (A0.1486677).

The Ballades, Op. 10, are lyrical piano pieces written by Johannes Brahms during his youth. They were dated 1854 and were dedicated to his friend Julius Otto Grimm. Their composition coincided with the beginning of the composer's lifelong affection for the pianist and composer Clara Schumann, who was helping Brahms launch his career. Frédéric Chopin had written the last of his famous ballades only 12 years earlier, but Brahms approached the genre differently from Chopin, choosing to take its origin in narrative poetry more literally.

Brahms's ballades are arranged in two pairs of two, the members of each pair being in parallel keys. The first ballade was inspired by a Scottish poem Edward found in a collection Stimmen der Völker in ihren Liedern compiled by Johann Gottfried Herder. It is also one of the best examples of Brahms's bardic or Ossianicstyle; its open fifths, octaves, and simple triadic harmonies are supposed to evoke the sense of a mythological past.

This is my arrangement of no.1 in D minor for symphonic wind dectet (decet/double wind quintet) and bass.

As an ardent fan of film, I have found myself increasingly attracted to full-fledged scores for cinema. No matter if it's an arrangement of a specific piece, or an original composition, I find myself wanting to view a movie merely for the score.

When I was growing up, Westerns were a ubiquitous genre in Hollywood. In addition, New York City had a number of television stations that offered them as well. What all of these films and television programs had in common was, that they always had a strong, catchy and folksy theme. Prime examples were the themes to Bonanza, Wyatt Earp, Wanted Dead or Alive, etc.

I wrote The Opening of The West with the goal of having some catchy, folksy and iconic themes that people would remember. I would like to think that this could eventually become an iconic western score.

Composed by Gustav Holst. Arranged by Ray Thompson. 20th Century,Patriotic. 10 pages. RayThompsonMusic #906857. Published by RayThompsonMusic (A0.1318153).

Arranged symphonic brass quintet.

I Vow to Thee, My Country is a British patriotic hymn, created in 1921, when music by Gustav Holst had a poem by Sir Cecil Spring Rice set to it.

The music originated as a wordless melody, which Holst later named Thaxted, taken from the Jupiter movement of Holst's 1917 suite The Planets.

The tune is used forWorld in Union – the anthem with lyrics by Charlie Skarbek, introduced at the 1991 Rugby World Cup.

It has been used for many other Christian Hymns.

Notable examples are:

O God Beyond All Praising – Michael Perry, 1982.

We Praise You and Acknowledge You, O God – a paraphrase of the Te Deum Laudamus by Stephen P. Starke in the 2006 Lutheran Service Book

The Answer – song with lyrics by Corrinne May, which appears on her fourth album, The Gift.

For the Splendor of Creation – a hymn sung at Harvard Universitycommencement ceremonies.

Building the Kingdom – a recessional hymn sung at St Aloysius College.

O Spirit All-Embracing – Delores Dufner, 1995.

This is my arrangement for brass quintet of Gustav Holst's orchestral arrangement.
It has an opening section, before the melody begins.

In the Bleak Midwinter

By Johann Sebastian Bach. By Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by Flavio Regis Cunha. Baroque,Contest,Easter,Festival,Instructional. Score. 12 pages. FRC Music #734177. Published by FRC Music (A0.1134073).

This Aria was originally composed by J.S. Bach for Violin Solo, strings and alto solo was now arranged for Piano accompaniment. You will be delighted to play this beautiful and satisfying piece of music by J. S. Bach that lifts the spirit and soul. The St Matthew Passion (German: Matthäus-Passion), BWV 244, is a Passion, a sacred oratorio written by Johann Sebastian Bach in 1727 for solo voices, double choir and double orchestra, with libretto by Picander. It sets chapters 26 and 27 of the Gospel of Matthew (in the Luther Bible) to music, with interspersed chorales and arias. It is widely regarded as one of the masterpieces of classical sacred music. The original Latin title Passio Domini nostri J.C. secundum Evangelistam Matthæum translates to The Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ according to the Evangelist Matthew Originally for alto voice, violin solo and string orchestra. The arias are in da capo format (ternary form). Erbarme dich, for alto, and Mache dich, mein Herze, rein, for bass, are examples of such arias in Part Two of the oratorio. In these movements the singers are accompanied by one or a few solo instruments and continuo, occasionally completed by other instrument groups of the orchestra. Flavio Regis Cunha is a pianist, conductor and composer from São Paulo - Brasil. He is currently finishing his doctorate at Mackenzie Presbyterian University where he works as conductor of the Mackenzie University Orchestra and resident composer. For more arrangements like this, works by commission or for any questions you can contact Flavio Regis Cunha at his facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/flavioregiscunha.
