Trombone Solo - Level 5 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.792200

Composed by Marsteller, Robert. 20th Century,Instructional. Individual part. 8 pages. Gordon Cherry #4625555. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792200).

Robert Marsteller had an illustrious career as a performing artist and a pedagogue, influencing hundreds of musicians in a major way. His Six Etudes most likely were written while studying at the Eastman School of Music in the late 1930's and are dedicated to his teacher Emory Remington.

The etudes are one page each, very challenging technically, cover the four major clefs, explore the extremes in range and are very satisfying musically to perform. If practiced correctly, these etudes will surely be a help to aspiring performers.

Composed by Julius Fucik. Arranged by Wes Ballenger. 20th Century,Concert,Romantic Period,World. Score and parts. 26 pages. Gordon Cherry #5040985. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792625).

Entrance of the Gladiators is a military march composed in 1897 and soon after was also subtitled Thunder and Blazes. It has become a legendary screamer march for circuses to introduce the clowns.

The march is in three sections with some very lyrical moments followed by the chromatic break section featuring the low brass. The final trio section is also lyrical and chromatic at the same time. When played as a screamer the tempo is often taken to extremes.

Wes Ballenger has done an amazing job of arranging this famous march for a virtuosic Trombone quintet.

By The Cyrkle. By Bruce Woodley and Paul Simon. Arranged by Aaron Hettinga. 20th Century,Contemporary,Folk,Pop,Rock. Score and parts. 16 pages. Aaron Hettinga #6027579. Published by Aaron Hettinga (A0.781982).

This oldie but goodie by Cyrkle and Simon & Garfunkel is presented here in an arrangement for Brass Quintet. All of the parts should be relatively accessible to players of even moderate ability as there are no major range challenges that are taxing to the extremes of any instrument. The technical challenges may come about if taken at a particularly brisk tempo, but even a slightly slower interpretation will sound great.

Twenty-three sacred hymns and songs From the Foreword:

Recent years have seen much increase in the activities of small and medium sized instrumental ensembles in schools at all grade levels, generally as an adjunct of band and orchestral programs. Many churches and Sunday Schools also use ensembles of various types in programs and services. Such groups are looking for playable music that is also interesting and worthwhile.

This collection contains settings of sacred hymns and songs, and other selections, all of which should be usable in the church and the school. The hymn and song treatments are not just instrumentations of standard hymnal type, but are complete arrangements, using such devices as introductions, bridges, reharmonizations in present day idioms, rhythmic variety, countermelodies, etc.

All selections have been scored for a six (or five) part brass ensemble with the following part books available: (preferred instruments are listed before the parenthetical substitution possibilities)

Part 1: C Instruments (Violin, Oboe, Flute); 1st Bb Trumpet or Cornet (Bb Clarinet)
Part 2: 2nd Bb Trumpet or Cornet (Bb Clarinet)
Part 3: 3rd Bb Trumpet or Cornet (Bb Clarinet); F Horn (English Horn); Eb Horn (Alto Saxophone, Eb Alto Clarinet)
Part 4: Baritone treble clef (Tenor Saxophone, Bass Clarinet); Trombone (Baritone bass clef, Bassoon, Cello)
Part 5: Baritone bass clef (Trombone, Bassoon, Cello)
Part 6: Tuba or Sousaphone (Bassoon or Cello with occasional lower range limits, String Bass 8vb)

While hoping to keep the selections interesting and worthwhile for experienced players, they have generally been restricted to a medium level of difficulty (or Grade III as defined by the Instrumentalist Magazine). Extremes of range and key signature have been avoided, lead parts have ample time to rest and catch their breath and technical demands are usually modest. Selections which could have been expanded to larger proportions (such as A Mighty Fortress) have been held to a modest length, in order to give younger musicians a better chance to play them successfully. Footnotes in the conductor's score indicate how the longer medleys can be abbreviated, if that is desirable.

Composed by Sy Brandon. 20th Century,Concert,Contemporary. Score and parts. 132 pages. Sy Brandon #3409931. Published by Sy Brandon (A0.755176).

This composition won Franklin and Marshall College’s wind Ensemble Composition Contest in 2001. Kakadu, Australia's ancient wilderness, comprises 8,000 square miles of the Northern Territory and boasts the longest continuous surviving human cultures in the world. Aborigines have been living in this region for at least 40,000 years. The region also contains abundant wild life. It is a land of varied extremes that creates a constant cycle of destruction and renewal. The composition is loosely programmatic. It does not depict the six seasons sequentially nor does it depict the six seasons with specific thematic material. The composition does attempt to capture both the primitiveness and beauty of this ancient wilderness and the cycles of its seasons, each with its own uniqueness and its challenge for the sustaining of life. The score prints on legal size paper and the parts on letter.

Composed by Sy Brandon. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score and parts. 253 pages. Sy Brandon #3415579. Published by Sy Brandon (A0.755203).

Legacy is a three movement composition for chamber orchestra that makes social commentary on the issue of global warming. It was commission and premiered by the Washington Sinfonietta, Rufus Jones, conductor.

I. Conflicts - This movement begins with a cry from native cultures admonishing our neglect of the environment. The cry is interspersed with debate regarding the seriousness of global warming (woodwinds). The debate grows stronger as the cries grow weaker. The debate is quieted by a measure of repeated chords that could be the words, stop it! stop it now!. A weak cry in the English Horn brings the introduction to a close. An Allegro section follows with a rhythmic and primitive sounding section representing the underdeveloped nations that are destroying the rain forests for economic gain. This material evolves into a more harmonic and contrapuntal section representing industrialized nations reluctant to change, also for economic reasons. Things quiet down as the music takes the listener to another part of the globe, East Asia. Conflict is again present in this section. The music returns to a varied restatement of the industrialized nations music before traveling to India for a section influenced by Raga. This section builds in dissonance until we hear the repeated stop it now chords from the introduction. A brief reprise of the cries bring the movement to a close.

II. Consequences - This movement evokes a somber mood that is reflective of living in a climate of extremes. The movement is in arch form as it begins and ends with open harmony reflective of barren lands that once were fertile. The middle section serves as a climax expressive the harshness of the climate. Colleen McCollough’s book, A Creed for the Third Millennium was a source of inspiration for this movement.

III. Sacrifice and Compromise - The movement begins with a strong section that suggests progress. It is followed by a quieter and intense section that alternates lyrical lines over a staccato ostinato that creates a sense of urgency. The opening section returns and is followed by a development of the ostinato section. This section is symbolic of how ideas need to be adapted in order for progress to be made. The opening section returns once more before leading into the concluding section where there is coming together of the instruments on a long lyrical line representing more and more people working together for change. The movement ends with a sense of triumph over adversity.

The score prints on legal size paper and the parts on letter.

HARK! THE HERALD ANGELS SING - Clarinet Quartet w/opt. Acoustic Bass and Drum Set Parts

Hark! The Herald Angels Sing is a Christmas carol that first appeared in 1739 in the collection Hymns and Sacred Poems, having been written by Charles Wesley. Wesley had requested and received slow and solemn music for his lyrics, not the joyful tune expected today. Moreover, Wesley's original opening couplet is Hark! how all the welkin rings / Glory to the King of Kings.[1]

The popular version is the result of alterations by various hands, notably by Wesley's co-worker George Whitefield who changed the opening couplet to the familiar one, and by Felix Mendelssohn. In 1840, a hundred years after the publication of Hymns and Sacred Poems, Mendelssohn composed a cantata to commemorate Johann Gutenberg's invention of the printing press, and it is music from this cantata, adapted by the English musician William H. Cummings to fit the lyrics of Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, that propels the carol known today.

This arrangement, in the clarinet friendly key of F concert, can be preformed as a quartet with or without the optional acoustic bass and drum set parts. No extremes in range or technique are required to play this intermediate level piece. Your performers and audience will enjoy the modern harmonies used in this presentation. Performance time approx. 2 minutes 6 seconds.

SKU: A0.1042377

Composed by Jamie Farrow. Classical,Contemporary. Score and part. 12 pages. Jamie Farrow #647168. Published by Jamie Farrow (A0.1042377).

This is a piece for flute and piano duo. Fastnet Rock, home to the Fastnet Lighthouse, is Ireland’s most southerly point situated in the Atlantic Ocean, famous for massive waves that engulf the island during storms. Three photographs (see below) and the lighthouse’s history were my inspiration for this duet, with the different images and ideas that they created, influencing my composition’s structure, themes and ideas at play. The piece starts at sunset and finishes at sunrise, with four sections each representing a different moment that follow a gradually developing structure through the first three sections before a gentle reprise of the ideas from Section 1 (S1) in Section 4 (S4). This gives a cyclicity to the piece, furthered by the tonal regions explored in each of the sections; Ebmaj to Amin to Bmin to Amin to Ebmaj. S1 invokes thoughts of the colours of sunset It is divided into four sub-sections, characterised by either solo flute or flute with piano, with each section exploring a different range of colours generated by their keys. Throughout, accidentals provide additional colour reminiscent of light diffracted during a sunset with the piano in the duo section voiced low in its range adding warmth explored through pivot chords. The flute plays in a very free recitative style, allowing the flautist individual expression emphasising the organicity of sunset as each performer will express this section differently. Section 2 (S2) and Section 3 (S3) are closely related, focusing on night-time through to sunrise in S4, with S2 providing the build up to the events of S3. In S2 the piano plays at the extremes of its range with widely spaced chords and no sense of beat, creating stillness and a sense of uneasiness through the constantly and irregularly beating A. The flute represents the rising storm and wind playing an organically-evolving motif beginning low in range, before gradually adding more notes and slowly rising, eventually reaching a dramatic climax which explores the extremities of its range whilst accelerating into S3. The drama and large gestures of S3 represent an Atlantic storm, a wall of oscillating sound through repeated piano ostinatos and constant use of the sustain pedal. Coupled with the frequently changing time-signature creating a sense of wild waves rolling in the ocean, the chordal bars percussively suggesting waves hitting the island. The flute captures the drama and emotion of the storm and the whistling wind, with long rising and falling gestures exploring the instrument’s very extremities. S4 brings the morning after the storm. We hear the same flute idea as in S1, this time played in the sadder Amin, communicating a sense of loss and despair following the storm. The piano emulates the now gently lapping waves against the rocks of Fastnet with the triplet motif in the bass. The right-hand of the piano plays a chordal accompaniment as in S1 but much slower, representing the slowly emerging colours of a sunrise which become richer and richer like the chords before the sunrise in the final few bars with a move into Ebmaj.

Composed by American Folk Hymn. Arranged by Mark R Lewis. A Cappella,Folk,Religious,Sacred,Traditional. Octavo. 12 pages. Mark R Lewis #810549. Published by Mark R Lewis (A0.1213363).

What Wondrous Love Is This is an American folk hymn that became popular during the early 1800s. It was first published in 1811 in the various hymnbooks that came out during the Second Great Awakening with various lyricists credited. Many publications attributed the song's tune to The Ballad of Captain Kidd, a popular, though much older, song and tune at the time. Earlier versions of the text are slightly different, but as with many folk tunes, it is difficult to tell which transcriptions are regional variants and which are errors by the transcriber.

This arrangement of the tune by Mark Lewis is for a cappella SATB Ensemble. All four voice parts are featured for a verse with different accompaniment each time. There are key changes to better place the melody in the ranges of each voice and there are moving notes in many background voices through most of the piece. As with many of Mark's arrangements, the outer voices will be pushed towards the extremes of their ranges even though the notes and rhythms are not incredibly difficult. Most intermediate choirs should enjoy performing this piece.
