A collection of four duets written with the youngest players in mind!

  • Ranges limited so that students can focus on rhythmic accuracy, tone quality, dynamics, and expression.
  • Rhythms are limited to whole, dotted half, half, quarter, and paired eighth notes. Rhythms that even the youngest musicians can count! No syncopation!
  • No pick-ups! Each piece starts on a downbeat so the kids can come in with confidence!
  • Each piece is about one minute in length to accommodate the limited stamina of younger players.
  • A variety of styles and moods to motivate students
  • Every measure of each part and score is numbered! You're welcome! ;)
  • Duets may be performed by any two instruments, with like or mixed instrumentation, but if you use mixed instrumentaion you may have better results if upper instruments play the top line and lower instruments play the bottom line. Also, it may be preferable to avoid having two tubas, as the results may be less desirable.

Performers may play through each Hornpipe twice, and where the ensemble contains more than four players the second time through may include all players or have varied instrumentation. The melody line has been shared between Parts 1 and 2, but comprehensive cues have been provided in Part 1 to allow the melody to be played complete in that part, if convenient.

The arrangement is suitable for multiple quartet combinations with parts available (and potential instrumentations suggested) as follows:

Part 1: C, Eb (flute, oboe, alto recorder, Eb clarinet, violin 1)

Part 2: C, Bb (oboe, tenor recorder, Bb clarinet, violin 2)

Part 3: C - alto & bass clefs, Bb, Eb, F (Bb clarinet, bass recorder, alto saxophone, horn in F, viola)

Part 4: C - bass clef, Bb, F (bassoon, great bass recorder, tenor saxophone, horn in F, 'cello)

Part 4 may be played an octave lower than written.

Any other appropriate instruments, even if not suggested above, may play.

Although the score is presented with a layout appropriate for string quartet this does not indicate a preferred instrumentation.

Programme note:

Baroque period composers in England often used the triple-time hornpipe dance rhythm. Composer Henry Purcell included several hornpipes in his theatrical music. The two hornpipes here are from 'The Old Bachelor' (1693) and 'The Fairy Queen' (1692).

The High Priestess is a chamber work for mixed instrumentation, including an F Horn with piano, violin, and flute. This piece is inspired by the artwork of the traditional Rider-Waite-Smith tarot deck, specifically the less credited illustrator of the world famous deck, Pamela Colman Smith. The music represents the symbolism and feeling behind the High Priestess card, with keywords of strength, adaptability, seriousness, intuition, loving understanding, knowledge, introspection, and self-trust. Each instrument is featured throughout, as the main melody and distinct rhythms are traded and dovetailed around the ensemble. The piece begins with a feeling of watery calm (e.g. Venetian Boat songs), ascends to a hopeful journey, moves through tense trials, then returning back to the distant flute melody, followed by a piano “solo†that ultimately inspired this chamber work in the first place. 

This work is great for high school, collegiate, amateur, or professional ensembles, as well as very advanced young chamber players looking for something new and fresh. Rhythms are simple, while expression and musicality can be explored. In performance, be mindful of balance issues, so seating arrangement can be adjusted. I recommend the horn player be seated on the outside, so as not to cover up the flute. Average performance time: ca. 4:30

Other instrumentations are in progress, so please check back for updated editions. The original instrumentation involved the oboe and cello. There is also another version with trombone substituting the F horn.
