Nadir (1994) is written for prepared guitar, a term usually associated with a piano in which certain objects have been placed on the strings in order to alter the conventional sound of the instrument. Many composers have written music for prepared piano, among them John Cage, who, according to Mr. Paraskevas, was the inspiration for his transferring of the same technique to the guitar. It is quite possible that nobody has used this kind of technique on the guitar before. After experimenting with various materials, he decided on the use of two metal paper clips, which he puts at specific locations on the fingerboard, so that they best produce the desired sound effect, a sound both harmonic and percussive. Nadir  suggests the lowest point, here associated with the notion of death. The piece bears many programmatic references to the struggle between good and evil, life and death, musically portrayed in the persistent ostinato rhythms and the fragmented melodic phrases. Death cuts through in the form of an abrupt strike on the wood, the fingers continue to play but no sound is heard, until two more strikes make their movement stop. Little by little life and sound start again, but the final strike brings about the pessimistic message that fate and death predominate in the end. The piece ends with the inscription ...but sooner or later we live forever - a final optimistic touch. Nadir  was the outcome of continuous experimentation on the capabilities of the guitar as an instrument, and all the potential sound effects that one can draw from it. ...Dr. Paraskevas, is an amazingly versatile guitarist.  He conquers the many technical challenges of this repertoire with ease, he can sing with the purest tone (try the opening work, Alfonsina y el Mar, and see).  What makes Visions of Azure a wonderful guitar CD rather than simply a good one is the last 18 minutes.  The guitarist saves his own compositions for last, and if the ear is fatigued at this point in the recital. Paraskevas gives it good reason to wake up....I am sold on Paraskevas's playing, and do not think hunting down the alternatives is necessary.   In short, this is an essential CD for those interested in modern classical guitar.

This book has posed some issues as it is such complex music it is almost impossible to cut it down to 5 parts while maintaining its integrity. As a result, some songs will be in 6 or more parts.This section of the 7th book is really a miniature scena (although Monteverdi describes it as a ballet), telling the story of Tirsi and Clori (Thyrsis and Chloris) two lovers from ancient greek myths. This piece is the final section of Tirsi e Clori, which Monteverdi describes as the Ballo (Dance) where all the characters in the story provide a spectacle of celebration at the end of the performance. There is a short (12 measure) section forming an introduction at a slow tempo, followed by a 1-in-a-bar dance, a change occurs at measure 113 to simple duple time before returning to a rousing reprise of the lively 3/2 music. The whole is brought to a rousing conclusion with a long cadence in what is rapidly approaching the Baroque style.The instruments are divided between two 'choirs' a 5-part one, representing the singers (Cantus,Quintus, Alto, Tenor and Bass) and a four part accompanying group representing the continuo. There is also an optional percussion part, as the original would have been so accompanied, even though it was not notated in the score.At just over 8 minutes in length, this is a great finisher for a concert - or, in the right circumstances, a starter - especially as Monteverdi has made the ending very loud and full.The seventh book has been a challenge. The much more intricate music, showing Monteverdi's development towards a true operatic technique requires a really careful study of his orchestrations. It has been a great pleasure to set this music and I hope lots of ensembles will 'give it a go'!

There's a bit of a simple cadenza to start, followed by some interplay between the flute and piano pretending to tune. Then follows a march-like section with some deliberate discords in the flute. As this section becomes louder and more animated, the players should act cross with each other!Then follows a dreamy little melodic section in waltz time. There's lots of chromatic work in this section. The piano now dominates for a short while with a melodic idea, based on the flute's waltz melody bot with tremolos which gives the music an almost zither-like feel (expect the Third man to walk on stage. After this, the flute returns to dominance but gets interrupted by the piano who is missing being in the limelight!At the change to a quicker tempo and a major key - still with 'out of tune notes' the two 'play nicely together' for a while before it all goes to pot again when the flute develops hiccups! This leads back to an altered version of the original march tune, but faster.This time the two find common ground on the 8ve leaps and the piece finishes with a short codetta. A great show-off piece for the finale of a concert, allowing both the soloist and accompanist to sparkle.
