With the title of this composition, Fever Fantasy, Jörg Widmann refers to its musical air: ‘I often feel Robert Schumann‘s melodic shape to be like the amplitude of a temperature curve: nervous, flickering, feverish, an infinite number of small and large wave crests and troughs within the principal line.’ The composer approaches this sound phenomenon with a setting for acoustic instruments. Nevertheless, he succeeds in conjuring up very unusual sound spectrums. Over long sections, the notation of this score mirrors the musical progressions, containing no concrete pitches but detailed performance instructions instead. Slowly, individual tones emerge from ascending pizzicato lines, colourless sound surfaces, sounds of harmonics roughened by tremolos, and virtuoso clarinet scales, tones that do not reveal their origin until the work ends: C - F - E - D sharp, the beginning of Schumann’s first violin sonata.

The requirement was to write a student piece for flute that told a story and represented the spirit, culture, and atmosphere of your country. Representing the island country of Grenada I wrote a flute duet using two local folk themes depicting 'sleep' and 'party'. The two flutes debate which to do. Each flute initially states their case, then the arguing begins back and forth as the phrases get shorter. Things get a bit more animated when the flutes begin interrupting and 'dissing' each other. With more energy they begin 'talking' over each other resulting in polyrhthyms. Finally they start shouting at each other and the pitch begins to rise before being abruptly stopped before things get out of hand. (The score includes prefaces and appendices to explain the commission, the story, and performance tips in greater detail.)

In the beginning, a Greek dance unfolds that develops into a faint prayer; shortly after, a waltz as a distant memory surfaces. The first theme of the work reappears to end the work in a triumphal and frenzy happy fiesta. The idea of the work came after a suggestion by Panos Liaropoulos to compose a string quartet for the summer of 2015. ‘Aegean Fire’ had its premiere in Greece by L’Anima string quartet and shortly after in Boston in February 2016. The Berklee Contemporary Symphony Orchestra under Francisco Noya presented the orchestral version ‘Aegean Fire Magnus’ in its American premiere in 2016 at Jordan Hall in Boston..
