The Fantasia bucolica for viola and chamber orchestra Op. 13f (original title: Fantasy in D) was composed in 1956 in response to a commission from the Kleines Unterhaltungsorchester Südwestfunk Baden-Baden and was featured in a recording produced for SWF in Freiburg in the same year, performed by this orchestra and the soloist Hans Hasselmann and conducted by Willi Stech. The brief concert piece begins with a dreamy introduction by the solo viola which leads into a virtuoso central section before concluding with intimations of the initial section. A striking feature of this early work is the diverse employment of the percussion section in the orchestral instrumentation. Martin Hummel.

Very little is known of his life, although he certainly served as parish clerk of St Dunstan-in-the-West Church on Fleet Street, London from 1564 to 1575 and from whence he oversaw the musical output there. Several of his compositions have survived including vocal, choral and instrumental works. He is best known, perhaps, for several pieces that were included in The Fitzwilliam Virginal Book, of which this Fantasia is one.

It is an eclectic fusion of Classical music and 1950's Free Jazz and West Indian/Caribbean rhythms with exuberance and pulse. It is in verse-refrain form, but is very freely treated and each of the four verses is wholly unique. Every single note is written to express, and sometimes expand upon, the word of the text at that point in time. There is an irregular meter which changes every few bars using 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 6/4, and 7/4 but always maintaining a strong pulse. It contains abrupt changes in dynamics and a rubato tempo with many markings of articulation. The duet is based on Io pur respiro, a madrigal by Gesualdo. As with many of his other madrigals, it makes reference to his wife’s affair and Gesualdo’s subsequent murder of her and her lover. The duet explores various genres, including Gesualdo’s mannerist style, a Rococo keyboard style, jazz, and traditional chorale forms, reminiscent of those of J.S. Bach. This work started as an experiment in adapting Gesualdo’s music to organ but progressed to become an exploration into merging genres. It can be played as an organ and piano only duet or as a duet for organ and piano, doubling harpsichord.
