Very little is known of his life, although he certainly served as parish clerk of St Dunstan-in-the-West Church on Fleet Street, London from 1564 to 1575 and from whence he oversaw the musical output there. Several of his compositions have survived including vocal, choral and instrumental works. He is best known, perhaps, for several pieces that were included in The Fitzwilliam Virginal Book, of which this Fantasia is one.

The Fantasia bucolica for viola and chamber orchestra Op. 13f (original title: Fantasy in D) was composed in 1956 in response to a commission from the Kleines Unterhaltungsorchester Südwestfunk Baden-Baden and was featured in a recording produced for SWF in Freiburg in the same year, performed by this orchestra and the soloist Hans Hasselmann and conducted by Willi Stech. The brief concert piece begins with a dreamy introduction by the solo viola which leads into a virtuoso central section before concluding with intimations of the initial section. As well as postulating the maxim that the effect of an entire orchestra should always be given priority over the effect of a single instrument, Mercadante's teachers at the Neapolitan school also showed great interest in chamber music. In contrast to Rossini, Bellini and Donizetti, Mercadante continued to compose instrumental music after finishing his musical training. By doing so, he gradually found his own musical language which combined the pleasures of musical lyricism and instrumental bravura while also enlarging his knowledge of individual instruments. Both the fantasia presented here and the sonata (cf ZZM 31150) for solo flute with ad libitum accompaniment of a second flute or violin reflect the vast instrumental knowledge which Mercadante acquired over the years.

It is an eclectic fusion of Classical music and 1950's Free Jazz and West Indian/Caribbean rhythms with exuberance and pulse. It is in verse-refrain form, but is very freely treated and each of the four verses is wholly unique. Every single note is written to express, and sometimes expand upon, the word of the text at that point in time. There is an irregular meter which changes every few bars using 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 6/4, and 7/4 but always maintaining a strong pulse. It contains abrupt changes in dynamics and a rubato tempo with many markings of articulation.
