String Quartet Cello,String Quartet,Viola,Violin - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1353485 Composed by Felix Bartholdy Mendelssohn. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. 19th Century,Chamber,Contest,Festival,Historic,Romantic Period. 36 pages. Jmsgu3 #938223. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1353485). The Significance of Mendelssohn's Preludes and Fugues, Op. 37, lies in its role in developing the organ repertoire and reflecting Mendelssohn's compositional style. The work, written in 1837, consists of three preludes and fugues for organ. Here are some critical aspects of its significance: Mendelssohn's compositional style: The Preludes and Fugues, Op. 37, showcase Mendelssohn's unique style, characterized by a combination of Romantic expressiveness and Classical form. This style is evident in the structure, harmony, and melodic content.  Influence of J.S. Bach: Mendelssohn's Preludes and Fugues, Op. 37, are heavily influenced by the style of J.S. Bach, a composer Mendelssohn greatly admired. This influence can be seen in the pieces' counterpoint, harmonic language, and formal structure. Pedal technique: In Op. 37, Mendelssohn composed independent pedal parts that reveal a thorough understanding of the role of the pedals in organ music. For the first time, he composed pedal passages that required more than minimal competency, demonstrating his skill in writing for the organ. Expansion of the organ repertoire: Mendelssohn was an accomplished organist and wrote dozens of works for the instrument. The Preludes and Fugues, Op. 37, contribute to expanding the organ repertoire and demonstrate Mendelssohn's mastery of the medium. Historical context: The Preludes and Fugues, Op. 37, were written when Mendelssohn was also working on his Six Sonatas, Op. 65. This period of productivity and exploration of the organ medium further highlights the significance of Op. 37 in Mendelssohn's compositional output. In summary, Mendelssohn's Preludes and Fugues, Op. 37, are significant to music history due to their reflection of Mendelssohn's compositional style, influence by J.S. Bach, innovative pedal technique, contribution to the organ repertoire, and historical context within Mendelssohn's compositional output.

Instrumental Duet Bass Clarinet,Instrumental Duet - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.844466 Composed by Felix Bartholdy Mendelssohn. Arranged by Phil Beaman. Romantic Period,Standards. Score and parts. 4 pages. Phil Beaman #3384667. Published by Phil Beaman (A0.844466). This beautiful tune was written by Felix Mendlessohn in 1845. He titled it Moderato in Bm when it was first published as Op 67 No 5 in a volume of his Songs Without Words. It was often referred to as Heide Lied , a type of pastoral German folk song. Another title derived from that is Song of the Heather. Many current editions give it the title The Shepherd's Complaint.  This instrumental duet arrangement takes a Romantic piece and sets it in 2 part writing. Even without the chords it is still very rich in sound and Romantic in feel. The metre is always in 3 even when the phrasing looks to be in 2; except for a section near the end where I have strayed from the original Mendlessohn and clearly marked Part II with tenutos to be in 2 against Part I in 3. I have also changed phrasing and articulation for more contrast between the two parts. This arrangement is faithful to the spirit of Mendlessohn yet freshens this beautiful old melody. The notes and rhythms are quite easy to play but I have marked it Early Intermediate because so much could be done with phrasing, articulation, and expression that would make this sound like a much more advanced piece. A great Romantic repertoire piece for students. (2 page score, 1 page Parts)

SATB choir with optional, a cappella (With Optional a cappella) - Intermediate - Digital Download SKU: LX.15-1084 SATB A Cappella. Composed by Felix Bartholdy Mendelssohn. Edited by Francis J Guentner. Prima Cantate Series. Educational. Octavo. 16 pages. Roger Dean Publishing #e15/1084. Published by Roger Dean Publishing (LX.15-1084). UPC: 000308037371.The part song, written for mixed choruses or equal-voiced ensembles, was a form actively cultivated by nineteenth-century German composers, Schubert, Schumann, Weber, Brahms -- and in this case, Mendelssohn. In fact, Mendelssohn wrote more than 25 of these very attractive pieces. The songs were intended for amateur or semi-professional groups. Their texture is for the most part homophonic, and they were to be sung without accompaniment. The lyrics of some of the finest German poets were often chosen for the texts and Mendelssohn has used texts by Uhland for both of these settings.

Instrumental Duet,Piano Flute,Instrumental Duet,Piano - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.824092 Composed by Felix Bartholdy Mendelssohn. Arranged by Tim TK Murray. Concert,Romantic Period,Standards. Score and parts. 10 pages. TK (Tim) Murray #5454043. Published by TK (Tim) Murray (A0.824092). This Capriccio shows everything Mendelssohn is best at. There is a calm, expressive opening and ending but the centre piece is a brilliant example of Mendelssohn at his most joyful and brilliant. Great fun to play and to listen to. This arrangement equally showcases the expressive and virtuosic qualities of the Flute. Originally from Glasgow, Timothy studied at the Royal College of Music, London and the Banff Centre, Canada. He was the Pianist for the Isis Piano Trio and Ballet Creations and is now in demand as an accompanist and chamber musician having performed with artists such as Dame Sarah Connolly and Tasmin Little. He has toured widely internationally and has recorded for BBC Radio 3 and Classic FM as well as TV appearances in Russia and Egypt. Murray’s compositions have been recorded by The Fibbonnaci Sequence and Piers Lane among others with reviews such as ‘Corruscating’ (Independent) and ‘Highly imaginative’ (The Sunday Times). Woodwind Ensemble,Woodwind Quintet Bassoon,Clarinet,Flute,Horn,Oboe - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1149582 Composed by Felix Bartholdy Mendelssohn. Arranged by Ray Thompson. Christmas,Romantic Period. 11 pages. RayThompsonMusic #749729. Published by RayThompsonMusic (A0.1149582). Arranged wind quintet Horn in Bb basso (alt hn in F) The six Kinderstücke, Op 72, along with the separate Andante in E flat major and Sostenuto in F major, were written in 1842 for the children of F W Benecke, a London wool merchant who was the uncle of Mendelssohn’s wife, Cécile (née Jeanrenaud). Exhibiting distinctive characteristics of the Lieder ohne Worte (treble song-like melodies and ternary ABA forms, for example), these pieces belong as well to the category of children’s music, in the tradition, say, of Schumann’s Klavieralbum für die Jugend and Bizet’s later Jeux d’enfants, and evince a naive innocence reflective of their intended audience. Of the eight, Mendelssohn ultimately chose six to shape into Op 72, the last work he saw through the press. It appeared in December 1847, one month after his death, and in England with the designation of ‘Christmas pieces’. This is my arrangement of No.5 Allegro assai.

String Quartet String Quartet - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.749754 Composed by Felix Bartholdy Mendelssohn. Arranged by Stephen M. Taylor. Classical,Concert,Instructional,Wedding. Score and parts. 44 pages. SMT Music #5971157. Published by SMT Music (A0.749754). Mendelssohn was a musical genius and it's obvious when you consider he penned this astounding composition by the age of 16. He wrote the octet as a birthday gift for his friend and violin teacher Eduard Rietz who was 23 at the time. This arrangement makes it possible for a string quartet to play the 1st movement. It's not always easy to get eight accomplished string players to sit down and read through music and this might make it more accessible and practical to play. The 1st violin part is the same as it was penned by Mendelssohn. The other parts are condensed. It takes some practicing even to read the music as it's somewhat difficult. And since the parts are condensed it's difficult to manuever page turns. I'll leave that up to the players. Still, it's fun to play and can be performed if you can work out the page turns.Probably work great on an I pad for that. I'm old school so my generation does cutting and pasting as needed ! Have fun. Great for parties, background music, wedding reception and general string quartet gigs.. .

TK (Tim) Murray #4785373. Published by TK (Tim) Murray (A0.824014). Three great arrangements showing Mendelssohn at his most lyrical and heartfelt. The Barcarolle of 1837 perfectly depicts the serene setting of a gently rocking Gondola in Venice. 'Adieu' Op85 No2 is a portrayal of a goodbye full of unspoken emotion and thirdly, the 'Elegie' Op 85 No4 is simply one of the most beautiful Pieces that Mendelssohn ever wrote. These are very rewarding works and  can be performed as a set or individually and will work equally as well for Violin Group. Robert Delfausse #5324223. Published by Robert Delfausse (A0.766986). Mendelssohn's Songs Without Words is collection of short piano pieces.  I chose four of these that seemed orchestral In character, and arranged them for chamber orchestra (strings, piano, and seven winds).  While arranging is often an exercise in reducing music originally written for a large ensemble, the challenge here was to expand Mendelssohn's piano miniatures into music for a chamber orchestra that sounds as it were written specifically for that ensemble.  Level: advanced intermediate.  Duration: 8 minutes, 50 seconds.
