Mendelssohn, between the ages of 11 and 14, produced over 100 works in a wide variety of musical genres and perhaps the most impressive of these early works are the 12 Sinfonias for string orchestra. The works were performed - almost as soon as they were written - by members of the Prussian Court Orchestra at the Mendelssohn family home in Berlin in an informal series of Sunday morning concerts, the ensemble being directed by the young composer himself. The page turns are impossible! This is full disclosure of the negatives. The saving glory is that it is one of Mendelssohn's best overtures. It captures the essence of the sea or in his own words smells of engine oil and fish not counterpoint. Difficult but worth the effort. Enjoy.

Two years later Mendelssohn wanted to present the work to the young piano virtuoso Delphine von Schauroth, whom he was courting at the time. He reworked it under the new title Rondo capriccioso, making it even more brilliant and adding a moving introductory adagio (thus described in a letter to Fanny). In this form, the work still presents all good pianists with a rewarding challenge. I did a bravoure piece for flute and orchestra respecting the Mendelssohn style.

German â?¢ English â?¢ French.This Trio op. 49 for violin, violoncello and piano was composed in 1839. In a letter dated March 21, 1840 to Ignaz Moscheles, Mendelssohn mentioned an inquiry by the publisher Ewer in London to arrange this trio for flute instead of violin. It is assumed that Mendelssohn either arranged the trio accordingly or at least authorised such an arrangement. Transforming the violin part into a flute part is quite astounding and was handled so freely and ingeniously in a variety of aspects that we can only assume that the composer himself could dare to come up with the solutions in question. Interesting information as to the history and development of this edition is given in the preface.
