I recently discovered Reynaldo Hahn via the superb soprano Veronique Gens' album Néère. She included in her album selections from Reynaldo Hahn's song setting of poems by Charles Marie René Leconte de Lisle called Études Latines. There are eighteen of these very enigmatic and fanciful poems about Greek or Latin gods and goddesses: Apollo, Venus, Lydia, Bacchus, Diane, Phoebe, Phyllis, Glycère, Naiads, Pyrrha, etc. Hahn set ten of these poems in an array of vocal settings: choral, solo male or female voices. For my song cycle I chose the remaining eight that Hahn did not use.

I Put A Spell On You - originally written and performed by Jay Hawkins in a Rock and Roll style - here written out in a disco style and in the same structure as performed by Bette Midler in the 1993 Disney film about witches 'Hocus Pocus'.

This version has been arranged for 4 female voices, all sharing the lead line, and providing the backing vocals in harmony as in the movie version.

The song starts with a semi spoken and free introduction, before launching into the epic disco diva style rendition made famous by the Broadway and Film performer. A great song for cabarets or stand alone shows - showing off character, vocal dynamics and range. Drum breaks are omitted or kept percussive on the piano.
