You can play it up-tempo, as originally conceived, or more slowly, as George Gershwin came to prefer.This arrangement shares the melody amongst the four players, and is designed to be playable by competent amateurs with relatively little practice. .

If the single top Ab is too high for your sopranos, and the altos are willing to sing low  F# it is perfectly possible to sing the whole thing a semitone lower (or even a whole tone if the altos and basses are willing!)The mp3 is for reference only, to show how the words fit  which cannot be done using synthesised sounds alone. Because  the current pandemic prevents a live choir recording  this is a multi-tracked effort, with instrumental bass supplementing the voice. It is functional rather than pleasant!

The singer is looking for love and asks the skylark to look out for a special person for him/her. This arrangement introduces some decorative bird-like trills and twitters in the second verse, which together with the rather unusual (original) harmonies of the middle eight and some tricky rhythms, make this a bit more difficult to play than some other Carmichael songs, but it should still be within the reach of Grade V or VI level players.

There are some daunting notes in Irving Berlin's rich harmonies, necessitating a bit of double stopping, and the syncopated rhythms do not come easy to some classically trained players. However, quartets that have a little time to devote to getting it together should enjoy this lively tune.

The piece was inspired by the ancient fire festival of Imbolc, celebrated at the beginning of February, and sets out to suggest the icy stillness of the world above ground, seeds germinating and beginning to grow underground, and the promise of harvest to come.  The audio here is for guidance only, as it is synthesised and the harmonics do not sound correctly.

This Prelude based on the old hymn tune, Bristol, is intended principally for use on the second Sunday of Advent. Our church music group has always played it in this arrangement, ie. with a flute solo, cello playing the continuo bass and various members of the band supplying the chorale, which appears from time to time through the piece.  The  obligato part could be played by a violin instead of a flute, and I will shortly provide a version for clarinet.

Here it is arranged in C for 2 violins, 2 violas and a cello, who takes the lead in the first statement of the melody. There can be a lot of expressive rubato from the solo voices, but I have left this to the discretion of the performers.
