Three light-hearted short pieces for clarinet and string quartet, evoking the genteel surroundings of a tea-room in the first half of the twentieth century. A group of friends, all amateurs, sight read the whole suite with great enjoyment and only one break (to restart the third movement.) Tea Room Quintet is ideal material to play in the background at social gatherings such as garden parties, wedding anniversaries and art exhibitions. The audio sample is of part of the third movement, which was particularly enjoyed by a recent audience. I am offering the score separately from the set of parts, to allow ensembles to choose how much to purchase. The pdfs include some blank pages, to ensure correct page turns if you are printing booklets.

Published by Daffiddle Music (A0.925225). The melody is called 'Carolan's Devotion', which sounds religious. In fact, it is thought that Turloch O'Carolan, the Irish harpist, wrote it for a lady! I have added lyrics derived from various liturgical texts (some a little outdated)  and some extra material of my own.  This would sound good at communion. We've done it with one soprano and the other parts played by stringed instruments.

You can play it up-tempo, as originally conceived, or more slowly, as George Gershwin came to prefer.This arrangement shares the melody amongst the four players, and is designed to be playable by competent amateurs with relatively little practice. .

The tune is pretty, and the harmony lines are quite interesting for the accompanying instruments.

One of Jerome Kern's most popular tunes, and available in numerous arrangements, The Way You Look Tonight  is here arranged in a comfortable key for amateur string quartets. The first violin part is a little more difficult than the others, but the cello takes advantage of the beautiful countermelody Kern provides for the reprise of the main theme.

This Prelude based on the old hymn tune, Bristol, is intended principally for use on the second Sunday of Advent. Our church music group has always played it in this arrangement, ie. with a flute solo, cello playing the continuo bass and various members of the band supplying the chorale, which appears from time to time through the piece.  The  obligato part could be played by a violin instead of a flute, and I will shortly provide a version for clarinet.

If the single top Ab is too high for your sopranos, and the altos are willing to sing low  F# it is perfectly possible to sing the whole thing a semitone lower (or even a whole tone if the altos and basses are willing!)The mp3 is for reference only, to show how the words fit  which cannot be done using synthesised sounds alone. Because  the current pandemic prevents a live choir recording  this is a multi-tracked effort, with instrumental bass supplementing the voice. It is functional rather than pleasant!
