Valse Lente, is a slowly expressive waltz with the two instruments presenting the melody in the different sections. Berceuse begins as a soft cradlesong, but gradually the music becomes more expansive before returning to the first theme to end the movement quietly. The final Marche is a jaunty, stylized comic march in which the theme is passed between the two instruments. Passages involving hocketing underlined byarticulation effects create rythmnic tension before the piece comes to a close.  Four Sketches pour clarinet et clarinette basse est est composé dans un style contrepunctal avec une vocabulaire harmonique tonale. J'ai Vu Le Loup is an old French song in which the Gregorian chant tune of Dies Irae becomes a lively dance. The lyrics describe seeing the wolf, the fox, and the hare (possibly the King, the Church, and the Landlord) eating, drinking, and dancing. Variations of this song seem to exist from as early as the 13th century and can be found in several European countries as well as in modern Cajun and Quebec French versions. Here is a brief description of the piece: Movement 1 (Fragments) introduces the sound world of this piece, and features different sounds 'bouncing around' each other to create different melodies and harmonies. Movement 2 (Breakdown) is an exciting rhythmic movement, where all four horns play their independent lines, which join together to create a somewhat 'groovy' melody. This movement is short, entertaining, and would also be a great encore piece on its own. Movement 3 (Reflection) portrays a more relaxed mood, where timing is much more free, and the listener is drawn along through the shifting harmonies by each note in the musical line. It then transforms into a 'floating' section, and segues into the next movement. Movement 4 (Interlude and Finale) revisits the original 'bouncing sounds' idea, progresses to another rhythmically intricate 'groovy' motive, and finally reaches a stable, sonorous melody that showcases the brilliance and majestic sound of all four horns together, giving a satisfying close to this unique work.
