The piece was one of the stand-out cuts, receiving a wide variety of radio play, and bringing the trio’s music to new audiences. Written originally for the mandolin, it surely is one of O’Connor’s most memorable mandolin melodies. With the aid of Edgar Meyer arranging the fabulous cello and bass solo sections, the piece can be performed in a variety of instrumental settings. The mandolin part could be also covered by guitar, piano, harp or most any chordal instrument. The piece was named by a young music student at an inner-city camp for underprivileged youths. At his workshop, O’Connor performed his new piece on the mandolin and asked for the kids to help him name it. The title, Butterfly’s Day Out, helped O’Connor complete his vision for the tune. The whole experience also inspired the idea for O’Connor to start his own Fiddle Camps. In reimagining the work for trombone octet, American composer P. F. Strohm has kept the piece in the original orchestral keys, and retained all the flourish and drama of the original work. The opening Dawn and Storm, the lovely Pastorale, and the touchstone Finale are all there. This tour de force work comes in two different versions, one for eight players (as arranged for SETREN), and this one for large ensembles of 16 or more players (as arranged for the Eastman Trombone Choir). The alto solo is straightforward, adhering to the original melody. The choir parts are moderately easy (with some divisi) and support the soloist for the most part; however, they are given the third stanza to sing unaccompanied. The brass parts are moderate in difficulty (1st trumpet is required to play a whole note D6 at the finale). A good pianist (late intermediate +) is required to play moderately fast scale passages, both hands, during a transitional section, as well as a number of thick chord passages and leaps. Valse Lente, is a slowly expressive waltz with the two instruments presenting the melody in the different sections. Berceuse begins as a soft cradlesong, but gradually the music becomes more expansive before returning to the first theme to end the movement quietly. The final Marche is a jaunty, stylized comic march in which the theme is passed between the two instruments. Passages involving hocketing underlined by articulation effects create rythmnic tension before the piece comes to a close. Four Sketches est est composé dans un style contrepunctal avec une vocabulaire harmonique tonale. Elle est en quatre mouvements La première mouvement, Invention, utilise une écriture canonique e imitative. Valse Lente, est une mélopée expressive avec le chant qui passe entre les deux parties.
